It is never talked about much...people just do not think of it or have the wrong impression of it, but I think you should consider Farmers Branch. Parts of Farmers Branch are just great. I live on Wooded Creek off Marsh between Spring Valley and Valley View...backs up to a creek with a wooded preserve.... Brookhaven running track behind that. 5 minutes to the Galleria, 635, North Dallas Toll...great central area. Addison is interesting as well but not sure about the housing for that price.
I am getting ready to move to San Jose and go through sticker shock. You will LOVE the cost of living here!

Farmers Branch is zipcode 75234. Located north of 635/LBJ and south of Carrollton. Mostly older ranch style homes w/ some on large treed lots. The area in Brookhaven Country Club will offer some golf course lots. Brookhaven College is part of the Dallas County Community College District and is located in Farmers Branch. Most of the city is residential w/ a few industrial areas. Those would be along the Stemmons corridor (east and west side) and over in and around Webbs Chapel and Belt Line. It is served by the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD w/ a few parts of FB being in the Dallas ISD.

Carrollton-FB school district is rated as Recognized - here is a link to get more details about that district:
http://www.tea.state.tx.us/perfrepor...list.srch.html
Just select district name for the search and type in Carrollton (or whatever district you want to look at).

Moved from Cali to Plano,
I am an appraiser for wall street, so I researched the heck out of our move, we settled in plano a week ago. If you have kids it is wonderful, what you will find like my neighborhood ranges from $154,000 to $300,000. Nice schools, we are between custer and Alma off of legacey. Nice area, great soccer, rec centers, swimming pools (your gonna need it) Very nice area. Also looked at Richardson, and Mckinney, depending on where you live. Traffic on the 75 Is horrid, and this is coming from a 405 and the 5 Driver. Rancho to laguna everyday.
Let me know if you need anymore information.

I will be in the Dallas/ FW area in the last week of June to find a home (Hopefully it closes before august) anyway, I have a friend that will show me around for that week I will be there but his views of Dallas are kind of California biased, Im not one of these californians that can go buy a 340-350 thousand dollar home, Im looking at mid-100's. My question is can I still live in a good "suburban" type area with that type of price range? He's telling me not to do Dallas because its bad. He lives in Mckinney and he loves it but I dont know if I can afford a nice home there. I've been on realtor.com and checked out most of the homes in all surrounding areas but pictures dont do it for me. I need to see the neighborhood. Well, if anyone can advise me on where to check out and where not to, that would be great because I only have a week to find a home and put in an offer on it and I dont want to waste my time in areas that are bad. I have five children, 2 eight y/o boys that play football and baseball and 3 girls that do dance and cheer. I also coach football and baseball, so I would be looking for a good recreation area also. Well I know that I typed alot but I just want some advice so that my kids have an easy transition as well as myself and the wife.Any info Anywhere near Dallas-all the way up to Mckinney would be helpful.
Thank you.

Red Oak and Waxahachie south of Dallas are nice, affordable & growing. Plus the construction on 35 should be done some time this century & that will make commuting easier.

How close to Dallas must you be?
If you are commuting to Dallas after your move, I would recommend Richardson. (75080) I lived there when I worked downtown and was able to ride the DART train everyday. (BIG saver on gasoline!)
If you are flexible, I would say head north on 35 to Corinth or Denton. Denton is a bit more of a "liberal" area (at least for Texas) so may be less of a culture shock coming from California. Corinth is a very "family friendly" community with TONS of park areas. Average home = $175,000. (76208,10) Good schools, either Denton or Lake Dallas district. Denton's average home value is a little less, and there are many nice homes built in the 1960s-1980s on the market now that are slow moving. This means you can get a LOT of house for a little ($110,000-150,000) investment. Schools in Denton are quite good, with Woodrow Wilson and Sam Houston topping the elementary level. (76209 and 76205 respectively.)
Unless you are VERY conservative, I would sincerely recommend avoiding Mesquite, (east of Dallas) and right now Farmers Branch is embroiled in some pretty ugly anti-illegal immigrant politics.
