Default Want to Relocate to Dallas from Miami

My husband and I are considering to relocate from Miami to Dallas sometime this year (hopefully) We visted about 3 years ago and really liked it. Now that I'm unemployed, I want to get out of Miami more than ever. My husband is an electrician, mostly residential construction and repair and I know 3 years ago there were plenty of construction jobs but now I'm not so sure. Is there? I also want to know what areas are the best to look into for quality schools. We have 2 young daughters and want to live in a safe, family oriented neighborhood with good schools. Any suggestions? I know Frisco is really nice, but from what I've heard it's become too populated, so I'm looking for a nice area not so congested.

We're looking to rent for a while until we become familiar with the areas, so our budget would be no more than $800 a month for a 2 or 3 bedroom.

With the economy how it is now, is there a chance to land a job before the move? Or is it best to wait until we are there to job hunt?

I've lived in Miami for most of my life and I'm terrified about moving to a new city where I don't know anyone, but I want to provide my children a better life, which I know they won't have if we stay in Miami. Any suggestions or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

$800/month for a 2-3 bedroom isn't going to get you very much. The lower half of the metroplex is cheaper than the upper half, so I would look there, but push out past the Dallas school district and possibly even south past the Dallas County line.

Your husband's better bet is to apply with a contractor that doesn't do residential. Even commercial has dried up quite a bit, but there are lots of industries that just have to keep moving with their projects due to aging equipment. My husband has 25+ years in the industry and there's still work out there. But like my husband has been telling me for 15 years in Dallas the construction is always feast or famine.

Illegal immigration has destroyed the residential construction trades in this part of the country and I wouldn't recommend it as a job opportunity for your husband.

I agree that $800 won't get you much, unless you go south. Maybe to Duncanville or DeSoto.

I would definitely try to find a job before you move. The economy here in TX is supposedly not as bad as many places, but I'm unemployed and am having a horribly difficult time finding work.

Good luck on your endeavors!

Even in the southern suburbs, $800 will not get anything more than an apartment. Rental homes typically go for around $950 and up. Don't get me wrong, there are some deals out there, but they are few and far between.

$800 in Dallas will get you MUCH more than what your getting in Miami. Miami is expensive. I lived in Florida for many years and I have lots of family in Miami. Just moved to Dallas 3 years ago.

Thanks for the advice. When I said $800 a month, I meant for an apt or condo. $800 a month in Miami will probably get you a studio. I'm just concerned about my husband finding a job. It's hard to find work while living out of state. I figured moving to Dallas because I've heard it's so much better there than anywhere else in the country, and also because I've been there and loved it.

What areas has the best schools in Dallas or neighboring areas? I guess I can start there...

I would love to answer this question but its just going to turn into a pissing match and everyone is going to say the part of town they live in is best. The northern suburbs are nice if you like newer homes and great schools (Plano, Frisco, Mckinney, Allen)

The nice part about living in the D/FW area is that it is so bland you won't really be able to tell Allen from Frisco to Flower Mound to Coppell, etc.

They all have pretty much the same strip malls, restaurants, same everything.

How's the job market out in Dallas?

North Dallas was nice when I visited but what about SE Dallas like Mesquite or neighboring areas? Everyone always talks about North Dallas, but no one mentions any other areas, feedback would be nice. Thanks
