I found an article on Yahoo News that linked to this American Lung Association study of air quality. (http://lungaction.org/reports/stateoftheair2007.html (broken link))

Of note to us in the Metroplex is that Dallas is not in the top 25 MSA's for "Areas Most Polluted by Short-term Particle Pollution" or "Areas Most Polluted by Year-Round Particle Pollution".

We are number seven on the list of "25 Most Ozone-Polluted Cities" (although MSA's not cities are listed). And Houston is number 5....

On the list of "25 Most Ozone-Polluted Counties" Dallas is ranked number 16, with Harris at number 7 and Tarrant at number 9.

Looking at High Ozone Days around the Metroplex by county (http://lungaction.org/reports/SOTA07_stateozone.html?geo_area_id=48 (broken link))

County..Grade..Wgt.Orange.Red.Purple

COLLIN....F....8.2...23....1....0
DALLAS....F...14.5...40....1....1
DENTON....F...13.3...37....2....0

PARKER....F....5.2...14....1....0
ROCKWALL..C....1.7....5....0....0
TARRANT...F...23.0...57....8....0

Ellis county did significantly better much of the Metroplex. Either there's a flaw in their methodology1, the reporting, or perhaps Midlothian's air isn't so bad when compared to the rest of the area.

(1) * indicates incomplete monitoring data for all three years. Therefore, those counties are excluded from the grade analysis.
(2) A dash (-) indicates that there is no monitor collecting data in the county.

1Here's the methodology for determining how many days were counted. The selection criteria for Particle Pollution uses similar language.
No data capture criteria were used to eliminate monitoring sites. All data within the ozone season were used in the analysis because the goal was to identify the number of days that eight-hour daily maximum concentrations occurred within the defined ranges.

Of course Ellis Co is going to be lower. The wind comes from the south and moves all of those pollutants over into Dallas & Tarrant counties. DUH!

I'd try to blame my current allergy/sinus condition on this but I know the real reason ............. cottonwoods blooming, too much of a good thing on Saturday and having a chain smoker sitting beside me Saturday night at the Buffett concert. I was borderline before the concert and that just pushed me over the edge.

If you had a chain smoker beside you at a Buffett concert on Saturday, you should still have the munchies.

HAHAHAHA!!! Well, this guy was smoking regular store boughts. But two different times during the concert I got a hint of some kind of sweet aroma in the air.
