Heck, even right now most of Murphy avoids Albertsons for that same quality/customer service reason and drive to Sachse or Plano for groceries.

I will pay more to actually get customer service that is TRUE customer service. I will pay more to shop in a clean environment. I will pay more to not wait in a long, long line waiting to check out. I LOVE SuperTarget and feel they have done an awesome job on the customer service front. And now Target is giving the customer back .05 cents for every reusable bag that is used on their purchases. Since that is what I already use it is GREAT!
I've wondered how even the Albertsons on Hwy 78 in Garland has stayed in business as long as it has. I've only been in there a few times if I MUST get something small and it is the one store I will pass. Otherwise I head to Target, Kroger or Tom Thumb. I went into the Sprouts in Murphy and was not impressed. I also know of several Murphy/Parker residents that shopped at the Target in Garland before the one in Murphy opened up. I can't see Aldi lasting long in Murphy with the current competition already there: Albertsons, Walmart Neighborhood Market, Sprouts and the new SuperTarget. Talk about an over saturated market.

Ah that Albertsons on 78. I've been boycotting them since 1998. The service there was atrocious.
I shop Kroger in Sachse (where I shopped when I lived in Garland) or the one at Los Rios depending on my other errands.
I skeeve at the Neighborhood Walmart. And Albertsons in murphy is literally known as being a giant convenience store. NO ONE ever goes there to shop for a whole cart. It's more likely "hey we need to go grab some ###."
Aldi wants to go in at Murphy and 544 next to Sonic. I can't figure it out at all. Not when the other ones I've actually seen going in are Buckingham/Garland, Jupiter/Park and Beltline across from the old Richardson Square Mall.

I'm the same way about the Albertsons on 78 that you are about the one in Murphy. I don't see anyone doing their major shopping there at all. LOL at the "giant convenience store" feel. So true, so true.
I've only been in a Neighborhood Walmart once and that was only because I was in Rockwall at a friends in The Shores and it was right there. That was a few years ago. Don't do Walmart of ANY kind, YUCK!
So there would literally be FIVE grocery stores right there. Granted the new Target is a block away but it is still kind of RIGHT THERE! WHY? Seems as if the city would try to get them to locate somewhere else that would be a better fit than at an intersection with other grocery stores. BIZARE!
The one in Rowlett is supposed to go into the old Brookshires at Hwy 66 & Rowlett Rd. Who knows how that will do.

All that competition will be great for the consumer. They'll have to have pricing wars.

I found this list of criteria at the Aldi site and I thought it might be helpful to the discussion.
Location Criteria: - Development lots or pads preferred – will purchase, lease or ground lease
- Lot size should be 2.0 acres or larger for development lots
- 17,000 square feet buildings with a minimum of 85 dedicated parking spaces
- Inline or end-cap space also considered - 93' frontage, 165' depth preferred
- Signalized, full-access intersection preferred
- Trade area population of 35,000+ within 3 miles, cities of 20,000+, counties of 40,000+
- Sites located in community and regional shopping districts with convenient access to population
- Sites zoned to allow grocery use

Actually I kinda like the Walmart Neighborhood Market and regularly shop at that one in Rockwall. It's nearly always busy, although I see lots of the Rockwall socialites wearing sunglasses shopping there in disguise.
I live right across the bridge within walking distance to Tom Thumb and Albertsons, but if I have to buy more than just 3 or 4 things, I gladly make the trip over the bridge. The best I can tell, I save 25-35% by shopping there, and it's usually better stocked than the Super Walmart even though the selection is not as great. As for our SuperTarget, I don't think it's so super. Happened to be by there last week to get some corn on the cob and a couple of other items, and they were out of corn. And no fast lanes open, so I waited 10 minutes to check out with 2 items. No more for me.

I shop at SuperTarget on sale adds, or have to stop and grap...for dinner. I shop at Tom Thumb for their meat, I shop at Wal mart for everything else. I don't agree with Wal*Mart politics, but it helps my wallet out in the end, and that is what my family is worth.

Aldi's is just fine for people who don't have noses in the air!
What is this world coming to when you people complain about having to bag your own groceries and pay for your cart until it is returned! Aldi's is not your higher quality fine grocer, but what do you expect when prices are that much cheaper. We just moved here from Indiana where Aldi's is very common. We did shop there for certain things, whereas other things are pricier and not worth it. I also think its great they charge for their bags. Maybe people won't be as likely to put them in their trash and send them off to the landfills after one use!

After the talk for well over the last year or two, work has finally started on the Aldi's location in Rowlett at Lakeview Parkway and Rowlett Road. I'm anxious to see what it's like. I also heard there will be a Sprouts at Rowlett Rd./Firewheel Parkway and Castle. REALLY looking forward to that as well.

I currently work for Aldi in another state, and customer service is very important to us. I can promise you that even with two cashiers you will get threw our lines quicker than you could ever get through a Walmart line with ten cashiers. Aldi's is a great store, I don't buy everything here but some things just can't be beat like produce. As to quality, people are very nieve. We have sold more cans of corn than Green Giant in 2008, this is a fact. You need to remember that thousands of cans of per say corn are lined up in the factory and some get a Delmonte lable, some get Aldi labels and some get Green Giant lables. All and all it is the same can of corn. Just some food for thought. I do have to agree that Aldi is great for somethings, our thought is that you shop for 90% of your things with us and 10% somewhere else.
As to to not taking credit cards, that is another way that we cut costs. The fees to have service for credit cards is very expensive, and we would then have to roll over some of the cost to our customers. That is what other store do, just like with bags, they are not free they just up other costs to make up for those "free" items. They tenders that we accept are tenders that pay us immediately, no bounced check fees, no losing money on credit cards not being paid or bad checks. Think about how much money other companies lose with these things. They don't obsorb all of the cost, they pass it on to you the consumer.
