Oops! I was really tired when I wrote this- I meant to write 1.5-2 hours in the car (minimum 45 minute round-trip from Lakewood/ Kessler).

I have read about a preference for multi-culturism and liberalism. Based on those criteria, N. Dallas is certainly not the first place that comes to my mind. When I lived in Kessler, my next door neighbors sent their kids to Greenhill. It wasn't the worst schlep in the world and there were/are other closer options: St. Elizabeth, Bishop Dunne, Bishop Lynch (all Catholic, but I didn't sustain too much damage:-). Speaking as someone who has spent the majority of his life in Oak Cliff, Manhattan (NYC) and E. Dallas, my observation is that while N. Dallas might appeal insofar as location goes, it lacks the multi-culturism and liberalism that can easily be found elsewhere in Dallas.
This is spot on.

Even in Forest Hills, near where I live, there are families who go to Lamplighter, St Marks, Greenhill - it has got to be an hour drive each way in commuting traffic, but they do get together and carpool.
Most go to St Johns, St Thomas and then onto Bishop Lynch. A few go to White Rock Montessori and Lakehill.

I also don't see N Dallas as multicultural. It's very white to me. Although it does have a larger Jewish population than most of the city - if that's what some are referring to as multicultural, I'm not sure.

70% public, 30% private according to two different sets of numbers I have seen recently. I also saw that almost 25% of HPISD residents choose private.

Just curious...did it break the numbers down by elementary middle and high school or was it just a generic number?

I can't remember but I do know it was for 75214 and 75206 (part of which feeds into North Dallas High). I don't think it included 75223, which is Hollywood Heights and Mount Auburn. Hollywood feeds into Lakewood Elementary so I would assume a high portion of those kids go public. Mount Auburn is low-income for the most part so I would assume that most of them go public since they have no choice (but pre-K - 3 M.A. Elementary is exemplary -- Mata (grades 4-5) has been more problematic).

Woodrow Principal Vail and Associate Principal Escanilla have estimated that we lose about 75 students per grade to private and magnets. I'm not sure where they got that info but it's being used to plan for transfers in for International Baccalaureate (applications will be available late in the spring).
