Anyone on this forum been to Gilley's? I might make it up there soon to see a band I like. But driving from Houston and just want to know some opinions on the bar and the area?

Also, are there any hotels that are close so I could walk?

Thanks!

Gilley's is in an area called The Cedars, just south of downtown Dallas across I-30. There is stuff to do in the immediate area: Lee Harey's is a fun bar with a huge yard- great on a warmer evening or afternoon. South Side on Lamar is a residential loft building with a coffee shop & amazing, famous record store, Bill's. Gilley's itself is in a complex with other live music venues The Palladium and The Loft.

But....and there is a big but....it is in/ borders a very rough neighborhood. The intersection where the DART station on Lamar is one of most dangerous corners in Dallas- murders, asaults, armed robberies, etc. You are fine to go to the area for an event or to the Southside building, but please don't walk around the neighborhood to explore the area.

I recommend you stay downtown (Sheraton, Magnolia, or The Joule if you want to spend $$$) and cab to the show. If you want to go out afterwards, check out uptown if you are more trendy/preppy or lower Greenville or Deep Ellum if you are more alt/funky. These areas are all within a 5-10 min cab ride from downtown.

The Dallas GIlley's is just a re-creation of the one in Pasadena, which has been gone for a long time. If you really want to go to a legendary country & western bar to see live music, come over to Fort Worth and go to Billy Bob's. Billy Bob's Texas - The World's Largest Honky Tonk Nationally-known artists play almost every weekend!

The Stockyards area is very walkable and safe. Fort Worth Stockyards There is a small rodeo, and lots of shopping. Several really good restaurants are there, too. I like Cattlemen's steakhouse. There is a Hyatt Place hotel and also the historic Stockyards Hotel.

Thanks so much for the replies/advice. I would be making the drive to specifically see this band, so Billy Bob's will not work this time around. I have been there a few times though and it is an amazing bar - it's HUGE and always has great live music. And I also love the Stockyards area.

My other option is to drive to SA and go to Floores... not sure what one I will do, but if I make it to Dallas, I will definitely take your advice Turtle. I'm not looking to spend lots of $ on a hotel, but I will try to stay in a different area and find a decent hotel for <$110 and take a cab.

What's up with Gilley's these days? I went to their website, and it looks like they're catering exclusively to the Rock music scene now.
