Denton is not a bad place. Used to be its own smallish city, but now has been taken over by the DFW northern sprawl. Now it's more of an exurb. Low cost of living. Don't know about the specific crime rate but I imagine it is not that bad. Depending on where in Dallas your husband will work, the commute could be rough. I-35 has terrible traffic.

Denton is also home to two Universities. The University of North Texas which is one of the largest in the greater DFW area. 35,000+ students so it might be the largest, and Texas Woman's University which is a female-only school. So a lot of young people, some cool local book stores and coffee shops.
The Denton County Transit Authority (DCTA) and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) are planning have rail service back and forth between Denton and Dallas. It's not scheduled to be done for until Dec. 2010, so that is an option in the future for your husband if he gets tired of the 40 minute drive. I lived in Denton and commuted to Dallas last year and the traffic can get congested when during the typical morning and evening commutes. However the drive itself isn't that bad, just a bit long.

Denton is not a suburb of Dallas. It is a small university town northwest of Dallas. The commute would be approx 40 miles (more if your property is north of town, but beware the commute during rush hour. Round-trip could easily take 2-3.5 hours of your husband's day, not to mention the wear & tear on your car. I-35 by Lake Lewisville is notorious for accidents and terrible back-ups.
I would not consider Denton a realistic commute if you are going into Dallas every day. It's something you could do about 1x per week, max, without wanting to kill yourself.

If McKinney is a suburb, then Denton definitely is too. Also, I would not call Denton small as it has a population of well over 100,000.

First off, Texas Womans University is not only a woman college, its for anyone. I have lived here for 15 years and i have grown to love it. I dont plan on being here the rest of my life, but it's a great town to raise a family in. Summers can be a little extreme as well.

Though I absolutely love Denton, there is no way to live in the area and commute to Dallas. Well, you can, of course, but omg, it would be one heck of a drive...

you are right, the commute is going to be horendous, but remember the OP is coming from Calif and yes, I certainly don't really think of it as a burb of Dallas, but a small to mid sized college town.
DFW$$s I do think it is a small or mid sized town. Lewisville also has that many people but is still a small town compared to some of the surrounding areas. That is just my opinion.

The difference between Denton and McKinney is the lake you have to cross.
Mom lives just south of the lake and I did my 2.5 years at UNT and have been up and down 35 more times than I could count. I live in Murphy now and have also worked in McKinney. Been up and down 75 even more times than 35.
As bad as traffic ever was on 75, it was never as bad as the bottle neck at Lake Lewisville. While people going north on 75 can take any number of alternate routes, you are very limited going from Dallas/Carrollton/Lewisville north to Denton.
So geographically it might be a similar distance but that lake makes the difference in my mind.
