Default Relocating to Dallas...Solo

Hi!

I am a single, 30 yr old, female. I was born, raised, and I still live in Baltimore, MD. I am thinking of relocating to Dallas. I was also thinking about Atlanta, but I've just about ruled that out...It's too much like Baltimore IMO. I've been seeing someone on and off who lives in South Dallas so I've visited several times. I fell in love with the beautiful homes you can get for such reasonable prices. So far I find that I really like North Dallas and the Downtown area. I'll be transferring to a job with my current employer so that part is taken care of. Here are the concerns I've been struggling with:

1. Aside from the guy I've been seeing and all his friends that I've met, I don't know anyone or have any connections in Dallas. Him and I aren't married or engaged and as I've said we've been on and off and back on again. So Im not making this move for him and Im not comfortable with the idea of meeting all my friends thru him. I'm moving because I have been wanting to do so for many years. Visiting him in Dallas just gave me the opportunity to get to know a little about this city. So basically I will be all alone in this move. Is it crazy/stupid to move somewhere and attempt to start building a life on your own???

2. I worry about making friends of my own and finding things to do that I'll enjoy. Don't get me wrong, I know there are places you can go in Dallas with friends that are loads of fun. But what about if you're by yourself? Or what if you don't want to drive 30-45 minutes to get there? Right now I spend alot of time in DC and NY as well as Baltimore. I can walk to Ravens Stadium or the Inner Harbor and enjoy some live music, a festival, or just see the sites. While I'm tired of the mentality here on the east coast and ready for a change, I love the random fun that comes with living and hanging out in these cities...Can Dallas offer any of that?

3. How is the dating scene? I've heard a lot about southern women and how they are different from East coast women. Is this true with the men?

4. This last one might be silly, but I worry about moving away from the scenery that the east coast offers. I love water, trees, and just living in a place that's aesthetically pleasing. Baltimore is not just what you see on The Wire. Dallas is pretty plain and flat compared to Bmore.

Ok, so those are my thoughts. Any input you have is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

I can answer #4 for you....after almost 3 years in Dallas I still miss big beautiful trees. My hometown is Atlanta and I think Atlanta is hands down more beautiful than Dallas. The people in both cities are great. You can not beat home prices here in the metro area but we also have REALLY high property taxes to consider. Best of luck in your adventure.

2. Can Dallas offer any of that? = No not at all. i moved here from NYC 18 months ago. I so hate it here and can't wait until my lease is up to move. There are no and I do mean no sidewalks here. Clubs and bars close at 2am. They also have what is called dry areas.
3. How is the dating scene? I've heard a lot about southern women and how they are different from East coast women. Is this true with the men? = Yes very very true.
4. Dallas is pretty plain and flat compared to Bmore.= This is also true. No trees or water. No parks you have to drive everywhere. Sometimes you want to change things up and walk once in awhile but its not goin got happen here.
Single moved here and left my family back east big mistake. The best thing about living here is my job.

Exaggerate much? If you haven't noticed the sidewalks everywhere in Dallas, then you must be blind. No trees, no water......don't get out much do you? Are you talking about Dallas or someplace out in the country beyond the suburbs? It's fine that you don't like Dallas, I really don't care. But I do care that you are misrepresenting the facts. Sorry you made a mistake in moving here. Perhaps you should have done more research before you made the move.

LOL! Please google about Parks, Bar, Club or Attractive/Tourist places in Dallas before you make comments. As I mentioned in other previous threads, Dallas has more than enuf "naughty" activities.

No trees or water? Really?

I live 5 miles north of downtown and I can walk to a 1000 acre lake and park in less than 2 minutes, on sidewalks, in the shade of trees the whole way there.

You have NO idea what you are talking about.

Now that's just crazy talk. One of the first things I noticed after moving here from South Florida was that, unlike much of Miami, there are sidewalks just about everywhere.

And, naysayers often bash Dallas (and Texas) over the head for its closing times as if it's some sleepy farming community where everyone dutifully goes to bed at sunset while the rest of the U.S. wallows in late-night, Manhattan-style abandon until the wee hours. But, outside of New Orleans, New York City, Miami, and Nevada, and a few other places, 2 a.m. is pretty standard for closing time in most of the U.S. and Canada.

LOL! This is really helpful! Thanks everone! Most Baltimore clubs/bars close at 2am so I'm pretty used to that. I'm not looking for Dallas to be exactly like Baltimore...otherwise I'd just stay where I am. I understand there will be some things I will miss. I'm just hoping Dallas has it's own characteristics that I can fall in love with. Jason, I haven't gotten everything finalized with my job yet so I may not be moving for another 2 months. But I will definately keep your info on hand. I'm gonna need as much info as possible! I looked up Addison and it does look a lot like what I'm looking for!!

Anyone else have info to share?
