My husband is looking at potentially taking a new job that may require us to move to or near Dallas. Wondering if anyone could point us in the right direction as to where are the best places to start looking.... We are a couple with a dog & a cat, (no children)we want to be within an hour or so of the DFW Airport. We are looking at renting first. I realize this is a vague description but we are starting from ground zero here... Ideally we would like a newer area that is safe with outdoor spaces like parks, dog parks, swimming pools. We would also like to be a reasonable (no more than 20 mins or so) from shopping, restaraunts etc.....We are kinda hoping to find a rental that is not a cookie cutter looking apartment. Maybe a townhouse, or home or even an apartment just not some generic looking huge complex. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

For the most part if you want to avoid cookie cutter or sprawling apartment complex you will need to stay out of the surburbs. I would suggest you look for an apartment near White Rock Lake. They have some great units tucked away in residential area's. You can walk the dogs around the lake and enjoy some coffee at the local coffee shops. This is were I would focus my search based on the criteria you have given.

I second Grainraiser - try 75214 and 75206. You'll love it. Search Lakewood, East Dallas, Greenville Avenue, M Streets, Hollywood Heights (75223), SMU, White Rock Lake, etc. Many dog and cat lovers..you can't go anywhere without seeing people with dogs.

Lake Ray Hubbard is bigger and cleaner than White Rock Lake.
White Rock Lake get bad smelly some times.

I see most retired people live Rowlett.

Grapevine city is fit with OP's requirements.

I think you people are over looking a key requirement here. The OP stated she wants to be in a suburb of Dallas & within 20 minutes of D/FW, not in the city.

In this case I would suggest looking into an affordable area like the Mid Cities of Hurst, Euless, or Bedford to start off with until you get a real feel for the area in general.

All of those places feature newer cookie cutter style apartment complexes.

Grapevine has lots to offer the OP, but it will all depend on her price range, too. There are lots of rental houses here, too. The only thing on her list that we don't have is a dog park, but my friend on the City Council tells me that will be on their agenda soon...

Take it from someone who goes to DFW every week, sometimes 2x. If this is important, do not overlook it. Those posters that have called it out are right. Depending on the time of day, the distance from the airport can be measured the same as the number of minutes or as much as double, especially for those (very nice!) suggestions to the East of Dallas.
