Crime in Dallas?
I'm trying to find crime statistics per neighborhood in Dallas. We are looking at a house in an area (Buckner Terrace) that is nice but is surrounded by some rough areas, like most of Dallas these days. I am coming up empty online. Anyone have any good sources?

I'm not remembering if Buckner Terrace is close to Pleasant Grove. I'm thinking it is north side of Pleasant Grove with some nice houses etc. If it is...close to Pleasant Grove, that is...stay as far away as possible. Even if the immediate area is OK, I think you'd have "bleed over " crime. I could be wrong about the neighboring impact but I doubt it. (I lived in Pleasant Grove 10 years and I know whereof I speak, if you know what I mean.)
Maybe someone else can clarify exactly where Buckner Terrace is.
I think our Mr. Statistics--Gopadge, had a website for Dallas awhile back where you could look up crime stats for a specific area, but I don't remember what it was.
GoPadge, if you see this, can you help us out here?

This should help you. http://maps.dallascityhall.com/index.asp?mo=CrimesOnMap. It's the Dallas Police Department's Crime Maps. You can zoom in on an area and view the reports of crimes based on type for the current year and the previous four years (2003 - 2007).
I tend to focus more on the violent crimes than the property crimes. Often I think property crimes, especially car burglaries are crimes of opportunity more than anything else. You can protect yourself by not leaving valuables in the vehicle. (Especially a garage door opener....)

Thanks, GoPadge. Good point, I think about the violent crimes vs. others.

With regards to property crimes, Gopadge is correct. I also feel that nicer areas are better targets for these types of crimes anyway. In these areas, people are in a comfort zone of sorts and invite this type of crime. Violent crime seems like a better means to measure how 'dangerous' a place really is...

That is true. Most property crimes are a crime of opportunity. The other thing I look at when it comes to some violent crimes is if it was stranger to stranger or if they knew each other. Domestic violence is one such. Your going to have domestic violence at all economic levels but more so on the lower end. While it may be a crime that is violent in nature but when it comes to really understanding it we need to know that these types of crimes are commited by people that know each other. When there is the breaking and entering w/ the rape or the attack at an ATM or some such that is one to weigh much heavier.
Buckner Terrace, as you have found out yourself there are some nice areas but it is surrounded by some not so nice. Move a little more to the west around Lakewood or Lake Highlands.

Whew! no, they aren't that close. We would actually be moving from Lakewood and this house is only 4 miles away. You have to go through some rough areas to get there but this area is just gorgeous. Thanks for your concern! Even though I grew up in Dallas I don't know it very well outside of "the bubble."

Thank you! I agree with you about theft vs. violent crime. They have a listing for BMV related crime; any idea what that means?

I believe that would be Burglary of a Motor Vehicle.

Buckner Terrace is just south of I-30 off Jim Miller Road. I have a friend who lives there an likes it and I had another friend and a cousin who used to live there... I haven't been over there nor heard much about it lately. I googled Buckner Terrace and didn't really find anything much - the sites were a bit incomplete. But I know they did have a pretty active neighborhood association in the past. So perhaps if you do a little digging you can find them..
