I just moved to Dallas from New Jersey, and I'm tired of the country, spanish music, and top 40 stuff. My parents won't get XM Radio, and I don't have an ipod/mp3/zune/etc or even CDs.. Im trying to find a radio station I can tune to that I can really enjoy. I live in the eastern part of Dallas county.. so if there are radio stations in other counties (like Rockwall) I can tune to, I'll be happy. Thanks!

Not really.

The Edge used to play indie rock on the Adventure CLub on Sun nights. I don't think they have it anymore. http://www.kdge.com/main.html

KXT has some of what you are looking for in rotation, but then they'll throw something in that will grate your nerves... KXT 91.7 | Public Music Radio for Dallas Fort Worth Denton

Can't you get an online stream of the radio station you listen to in NJ?

No there arent any.

Inide rock formats are really hard to make work. Back in LA we had Indie 103.1, for years, but even it couldnt survive in LA. Its now El Gato 103.1.

Its a tough format to make work.

In my experience, I've found college radio to be a good place to find a lot of non-corporate/indie/underground stuff. Maybe check for the local college/university radio stations?

KEXP streams online. Its the most amazing radio station from Seattle. Its "listener powered" so you dont have the cheesy commercials or outside interest promoting music. If you listen to it you will definitely be the coolest kid you know: KEXP 90.3 FM - where the music matters

Hey- I remember you! Where did your family end up moving?
Can't help on radio- it's been at least 15 years since we had a great station in Dallas. Have you used Pandora.com?

KXT is the best alternative and they certainly play the most indie-rock of anyone around -- along with some jazz, country, world music and lots of local and Texas music. Here's a sample playlist from earlier today. Who else is playing Grizzly Bear, Frightened Rabbit, and Calexico?:

9:58 Joe Pug – Speak Plainly, Diana
9:56 Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal
9:53 Grant-Lee Phillips – Good Morning Happiness
9:48 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – American Girl
9:43 Queen – Somebody To Love [ Buy: Amazon | iTunes ]
9:40 Trio – Da Da Da (I Don’t Love You You Don’t Love Me Aha Aha Aha)
9:34 Leonard Cohen – Tower Of Song
9:29 Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks
9:25 Calexico – Quattro (World Drifts In)
9:20 XTC – Making Plans For Nigel
9:14 Frightened Rabbit – Swim Until You Can’t See Land
8:57 Works Progress Administration – Always Have My Love
8:53 John Gorka – I Think Of You
8:49 Pearl Jam – Just Breathe
8:47 The Police – Voices Inside My Head
8:41 Pink Floyd – Fearless
8:37 Rilo Kiley – Silver Lining
8:32 Tift Merritt – Neighborhood
8:25 Broken Bells – Vaporize
8:18 James – Waterfall
8:11 Langhorne Slim – Say Yes

And, yes, KDGE (The Edge) still broadcasts "The Adventure Club," an indie and modern rock show, on Sunday nights from 8 to 11 pm:

102.1 THE EDGE

Internet radio. nuff said. Most radio stations broadcast over the net. That's how I get my talk radio from L.A. You may also want to check out pandora. It's streaming internet radio. You type in a song or artist you want to listen to. It'll first play a song by that artist then pick other songs from other artists they've deemed similar based on their music genome project. You can either rate it as thumbs up - it's what you wanted to hear, or thumbs down if it's not. I used to listen to Pandora at work until they outlawed streaming music.
