I recently got Vonage and my home alarm system (ASG) started malfunctioning. The repairman came and said that the alarm company cannot guarantee their service if I use Vonage or any other VOIP service. They said I have to sign a disclaimer stating that I will not hold them responsible because now they cant provide me a 100% guarantee that the alarm would work.

I am thinking about changing my alarm company but I wanted to find out first are all alarm companies like this? What other home alarm companies service the Dallas Metro area?

Get cell phone back up unit installed for alarm. Their is additional fee for cell service for the unit.
However alarm is useless if it can not call out for help.

I know with Vonage some Tivo units don't work correctly. If you want to be the absolute safest I would get a very basic plain old phone line (no features, just a basic line), and use that for your system.

I agree with Lake Ray

The security system company can come back and put in a cell phone unit and it will use that instead of Vonage. That's what I did when I had Vonage because my ADT system wouldn't work with it.

How much would the cell phone option cost? is it a regular cell phone with service from Verizon, Spring, T-Mobile, etc. .. or is it a special phone?

I was hoping there would be an alarm company that works with Vonage.

I just had Smith Thompson install a cell phone system. It was only an additional $49 for the cellular uplink unit, and there is no additional monthly charge for monitoring. It's basically just a box with an antenna they wall mount above your alarm controller.

Weird that those security companies don't just hook up to the internet. It's 2010 - why use dialup via a POTS modem.

Do you want to base your home security on an internet connection?

You think a telephone line is more reliable ?!

And if I wanted to break into a home, the first thing I'd do is snip the telephone line.

I never activated any home security system because I consider them a worthless pseudo-safety smokescreen invented for a scared populace from whom to extract yet another monthly fee.

Reason = easy defeat with a simple set of wire cutters.

you would have to cut the electric line to keep a cell phone from working as an alarm...IF it was plugged into the outlet--
