It's a largely republican state where people work hard and stand on their own two feet and don't ask for assistance because they got canned from a job.

Pick yourself up and push forward, don't blame the state and all the people living there because they wouldn't give assistance that quite honestly wouldn't have truly helped you anyway.

Sorry for your unfortunate circumstances, I really am, but I work my ass off to pay for people with this mentality and it really gets me miffed. Instead of looking for a way off unemployment you look for MORE unemployment assistance in probably the healthiest of job markets in the US, now there is a twisted irony. Sheeesh.

Then I was let go from my job, come to find out, because another administrative assistant was racist and went back to her boss telling lies. I knew nothing of it, nor was ever asked about it, until one day I was told I was fired. Texas isn't a right to work state so there is not action to take.
Texas is one of 22 "Right to Work" states. However, "Right to Work" in this sense has to do with unions.

Seriously? Did you even read her post? Doesn't sound like she's some welfare queen looking for a free ride. It sounds like somebody who's worked hard, found some bad luck, and has kids to worry about until she CAN pull herself back to her feet.

I can't believe in this recession and with so many people unemployed through no fault of their own that other people would be so critical and judgmental of others needing to use the safety net that this society rightfully provides for its citizens.

It's the overall complete lack of empathy in Texas that miffs me.

You are a brave and inspiring woman to think of your future and make the move. Don't worry too much, things will fall into place.

Please do not move to the city of Dallas. Not a good idea for your child's future. Please consider Frisco or even Prosper, Celina. The schools are excellent, and everything is so convenient, you won't be driving long distances.

Have you even ventured into the Dallas City Limits? It is not all that bad. And if one does live in somewhere so far out like Prosper or Celina they WOULD be driving long distances. If they need first class medical services they are going to have to venture into Big Bad Dallas. The horrors......

sorry I should've been more specific referring to inside the Dallas city limits. The school system in Dallas isn't something I would put my children in. My husband went through DISD his entire life, and it's his greatest regret, it was a terrible experience (went to WT White and lived in Midway, Forest lane area.) His parents still live in the area and all the neighbors send their kids to private school. I asked her next door neighbor why, she said no one would ever send their kids to Dallas public schools in their right mind.

One of my best friends grew up and loved Farmers Branch, but once her 1st daughter was old enough to attend schools, she was a minority as a Caucasian, and came home singing filthy rap songs as a 1st grader. So that's just what I was hearing.

Then that is good. You are leaving open spots in the top high school in the country and the top arts magnet in the entire area for those that truly desire to be there and take advantage of it. You are aware that the DISD has one of THE top high schools in the entire country..... and that the arts magent, Booker T. Washington is VERY DESIRABLE and has graduated many very well known artists. Kids from outside of the DISD fight for those cherished spots at these schools.

Oh, there are people that go thru every single high school out there that had bad experiences and hated/regreted their schools. It is not just the DISD but even the suburbs have that. It is all up to the kids and that childs parents how they handle the situation(s) and take advantage of the gift of education they are being given.

As for many people in that one area that send their kids to the private schools in that immediate area......... that is because that area is "hot" for people that ONLY want to send their kids to private schools and the best private schools in the entire Dallas metroplex are all right there. So they move there to be close to their childs school. I know of 3 families that did just that and one moved from........... gasp, FRISCO!

As for Farmers Branch....... it's been a white minority area since the mid-80's. That is nothing new. And white kids sing "filthy rap music" too.

Hey skids, I am very offended by your post. This is a very young, single mother. I'd bet $1000 you are of the male gender. It would be great to interview your wife/girlfriend and/or sisters. I'll bet you leave your laundry on the floor for the women to pick up and wash, dry, fold, put away. I'll bet they do 99% of the dishes. I'll bet they do 99% of the grocery shopping, the vacuuming, the scrubbing of toilets, etc. If you have children, I'd love to know how many times you actually HELP them with their homework, sit and LISTEN while they talk to you about their personal troubles. Men bash away at people like this when the women run behind them doing all the housework. You have no idea what it is like for a young, single mother. Next time keep your trap shut.

Yes I did know about Booker T. Washington, it's an awesome school! And truthfully, I don't know anything about the Dallas magnet schools so I'm glad you set me stratight! I was strictly talking from my husband's experience and my mother-in-laws' neighbor. But you're probably right, many of those people would probably send their kids to private school anyway.

W.T. White is one of the top high schools in the nation as ranked by Newsweek (Dallas ISD has eight high schools very high on that list). It is also ranked "recognized" which is very difficult for a comprehensive, diverse high school to achieve in the city or in the suburbs. In fact 54% of all Dallas schools are recognized or exemplary.

Perhaps you have more of a problem with the diversity part...
