My husband and I recently moved from Fort Wayne, IN to Dallas. We currently have an apartment near LBJ/Skillman - needless to say, we're looking to move as soon as our lease is up next year. I'm starting graduate school at SMU, and my husband works in the 4000 block of Spring Valley Road. Can you give any recommendations for an area to live in? Neither of us mind a small commute (less than 40 minutes would be ideal!). Thanks!

Are you looking to buy or lease? Whichever you prefer, how much do you want to spend?

Congrats ! We moved from Goshen, Indiana last year. We chose Frisco because everything was new up here. Keep coming north until the drive takes longer than you would like.

We're looking to rent. Our price range is anywhere from $600-850 (either 1 or 2 bedrooms). We experienced kind of a sticker shock when we moved down here - our 1-bedroom apartment in Fort Wayne cost us $375 a month, including all appliances and heat!

Is there any suburb or area of Dallas that would be a good middle point between SMU and Spring Valley Road?

There are also some nice apartments located around Medical City Hospital which is on the southwest corner of 635 and 75. Make sure you don't go north of 635 because it is very sketchy over there.

You might look in Addison. The Vitruvian Park development is going up right by 4000 Spring Valley and looks really nice. It's about 15-20 minutes to SMU.

Apartments around SMU are going to be at the upper end of your price range, but you might be able to find something. You could look at the Village. It's mostly yuppies and college kids, but there are a good number of young families and older people as well. I think it would fall in your price range. It's very close to SMU.

If you are on a tight budget do NOT, DO NOT go too far north. You will be spending more time on the road and not on studying or being w/ family. NO WAY!!! Not to mention the expense of the longer commute with gas and car maintenance. It is NOT worth it at all. Your husband would be miserable if you lived in Frisco and you are going to school at SMU. Remember those late nights and how far away you would be and tired.

The Village is an option. Since you are both still young it would work and be in a better area than you are now. And to think...... my husband used to live over there where you are when it was all fairly brand new and all nice and well kept. Have things changed. A LOT! As grainraiser suggested, there are some nice newer apartments just behind Medical City Dallas off of Hwy 75 & Forest Ln - Coit area. It would be close for your husband and not too bad for you.

Good luck

There are some nice, reasonably priced apartments/condos just west of 75 in between Forest and Walnut Hill. Very close to SMU and good highway access on 75 and 635. I would advise you to keep West of 75, though, it gets kind of sketchy immediately East of the highway.

You should also contact a Realtor. They don't just sell homes, they also will help you lease a house or condo that's not in a typical apartment community. We used a realtor when we were looking and found several units, one of which we leased. He had great knowledge of neighborhoods which helped immensely, and it didn't cost us a thing. Their commission is paid by the landlord.

Check out the apartments on and around E. University between Greenville Avenue and Skillman south of Lover's Lane - Sandhurst, Amesbury, Birchbrook and Danbury are some of the streets - free bus shuttle to SMU and DART rail -or you can walk. The Village Apartments lifestyle for much less. Also close to Central Market.

75206 is the zip. Also located in the blue-ribbon, exemplary Stonewall Jackson Elementary zone. See northern section of this map:

New condos, converted condos, well-kept spacious older apartments and new developments - all mixed together.
