Thank you everyone for your replies. Here's a few bits of info that may be helpful..... Our children are not of school age so schools are not a factor. Renting an apartment is not effective for us, we still have a mortgage to pay for in FL, so finding a house with a back yard b/c of dogs is required. I would love to have a gym and pool within walking distance but an apartment isn't suitable with two dogs. I know some people do it and love it but it's not how we want to live. Thank you again.

Can one of you fly up here for a week and check things out? You will probably find places for rent that you will not find online.

Finding a rental house can be kind of hodge podge.

The avh, coldwell banker, gem city real estate - there are realtors that property manage rentals but you have to bump into them - there doesn't seem to be a good list anywhere and it is frustrating.
Also military by owner.com is a great place.
Happy hunting.

Stay away from McCook Field! The EPA says the chemical (TCE) evaporates into thin air once it is sucked out of the ground, but I wouldn't trust that information. Why take the risk of breathing in a carcinogenic if you don't have to?

We live in Kettering and there are lots of houses for rent, one in our neighborhood, I can give you the number if you want it, email me. Kettering is about 20 minutes from WPAFB and is a nice community.

I just signed a lease yesterday for a 3BR/21/2/ba in Springboro. We moved here from Brooks AFB, TX and started looking the next day. We had 2 realtors looking for us but with my own researching every night, I saw the homes online before they even sent them to me. We found our house on Craigslist too for only $1250. We started asking if we signed a multi-year lease would they discount the rent. They all said yes. We looked everywhere. Didn't like Huber Heights shopping, too run down, but Mad River schools got rave reviews and Forest Ridge does have a few up for lease and sale and they have their own pool, basketball court. Centerville had almost no homes or were snatched up the same day. Just be aggressive. This whole area seemed to have missed building homes in the 80's and 90's, like they just stopped in the 70's. Which makes for smaller bedrooms and weird layouts for family rooms. But every area had very well maintained yards and all homes exteriors were well kept. I just used every search word link I could find every night. And 2 realtors, who showed us the houses for the owners, had other homes to show us that hadn't come on the market yet. It's hard, trust me, we knew we were coming here since last year and I had my doubts about the housing too. But once I saw the area, it is really pretty and I just kept looking. 8 days and 17 houses later, we found the one. PS. Save some gas money for driving around all of these neighborhoods! Good luck!

There are great neighborhoods in all of Dayton. Oakwood will be expensive and they have community regulations that restrict jogging, mowing your grass, etc. If you like uppity Oakwood is right for you. If you like a happy medium of nice and normal then Kettering is GREAT! Centerville is south of Dayton so you'll want to consider where you work. Lots of traffic. Please reply if this helps and write for additional. How much you willing to spend for a 3bedrm? I know of a lovely one on the market for sale. Its really nice and in a good neighborhood. Great school bus schedule. Its for sale but has been for awhile. Are you interested in the realtors number?

Thank you for your help "nonamesplease." We will not be buying, we still have our mortgage here in FL to pay. I've seen Centerville on the map, our first trip up is next week. Schools aren't a concern for a few more years and we probably won't be in the area by then. Are there any big medical complexes in the south of Dayton area?
