..and a tweed jacket.
Little known fact: Oakwood (the area east of Far Hills) has the highest concentration of college professors, assistant professors, and instructors in Montgomery County.
Acadamics prefer Oakwood.

Before, I couldn't even spell "academic". And now I are one! (Sorry, sir, I just couldn't resist... And I make "misteaks", too)

Thank goodness for that! When I was in college, I simply could walk across Irving Avenue and have access to a number of babysitting jobs from my professors.

Oakwood, The Best? Well the best comes with a price and you better have plenty of it too. I have a friend that has a house comparable in size to mine, he's located on 48 between Oakwood & dayton city limits, I live in a Historical area and his property taxes are 10K more a yr than mine.......Also I thought my historical district had rules, my word you can't even mow your yard without a shirt on without getting yelled at in Oakwood! Trust me I know and I don't have that bad of a bod...

I would say that 20 years ago, when I still lived in Dayton, Oakwood was known as snooty. I don't really know if it holds now, but a snooty girl I graduated high school with moved there a couple years ago, and just loves to brag about it. Also, my uppity uncle bought there too when he moved back to Dayton. No place else was good enough for him.
That said, the area is also well known for beautiful homes and great schools. No matter where you live, some people will be uppity/snooty, but that certainly doesn't mean everyone is! Be friendly, take care of your property, and I would think most people would be good back. And the ones who aren't receptive--well, who needs 'em?

Personally, I love Oakwood's history and homes. It's unique to the Dayton area as most other places similar are in or surrounded by rougher areas of the city.
And there are people in Oakwood who are not snooty. But I didn't say they all weren't. Basically, it depends on who you meet and I've had the pleasure of meeting both sides.

firefightermom, I think you've said it all. I believe that most Oakwood residents know the value of hard work. They are successful and they appreciate a well-cared-for home, good schools and excellent city services. If you don't fit that mold, you probably should be living elsewhere...

Some of that reputation is well deserved. I remember walking off-campus into Oakwood was a real experience if your group included people of color. You were either stopped by the local PD or followed constantly.

Lol and it has not changed much at all. I recall in the middle to late 90's a buddy of mine was driving (home!) via north on rt.48 inside Oakwood. A Cop stopped him and get this , NEVER issued him a ticket nor warning but asked him what is he doing driving here..
What is funny is my buddy was a long time Navy man from Wright Patt who had just started living in Kettering with his wife and kids.
Somethings never change. To me that's Southern Ohio for you as a person of color. But as the other person said there are good people too and I do believe it. You got to stick to the good ones and pray for the bad ones.
I used to be leery of venturing far inside Oakwood during my high school years in the City of Dayton.
Since then as I have matured and grown older I have taken my wife for rides through there to show her the beautiful homes there. I still get the silly stares like we did 20+ years ago. But someone even waved at us!
