We are moving to Ohio next year (I am from Germany, my husband is american). He will be working in Beavercreek. I am trying to find out what will be the best place to live at. So far I am looking at Oakwood or Mason (too far ?). Somekind of a commute is OK. We like to be close to a big city but also like the suburban feeling. Schools are also very important (we have to small children) as well as sports activities (our son is a tennis and soccer player, our daughter a swimmer and likes horseback riding). Oh...we are looking into buying a house. I appreciate everybodys ideas and help. Thanks so much in advance.

Oakwood is a good possibility. Great homes. Pretty walkable (all kids walk to school). Great public service department(s). The biggest downside is if you like newer homes, they are hard to come by and usually expensive. If a newer home (1950's or younger) is what you want, I'd look into Beavercreek or Centerville (or even Springboro) over Mason. Here is why.

Mason is pretty far, and does not really have a direct route to Beavercreek. To reach the northern fringes of Mason from Beavercreek takes 45 minutes at off-peak traffic times. I'd expect it would be at least 15 minutes longer at rush hour (even against traffic), and even worst in the winter when there is snow.

Also, Centerville and Beavercreek offer pretty similar suburban experiences. You can get the same type of suburb in these three cities, so why bother with the long commute?

Beavercreek lacks a rec center, unlike Mason and Centerville, but does have a nice YMCA and other private swim clubs. The Raiders club swim team, associated with Wright State University, does pretty well and has excellent facilities. Wright State is located between Beavercreek and Wright-Patt Air Force Base in Fairborn. For horseback riding, it may be a little hard to find a stable, but they are out there. I know of two or three in Greene County.

As far as soccer, Beavercreek and Centerville have some of the best programs in the state at their respective high schools. Tennis also does fairly well regionally at both schools as well. While the elementary and middle schools don't have tennis, there are rec leagues on which to play. The same could be said for soccer. There are feeder programs for soccer that are quite competitive (meaning their are tryouts). This is usually in the form of club sports that travel for tournaments. Many of the different clubs here do quite well and many of the local tournaments are rather large (Warrior Classic).

As far as Beavercreek and Centerville (or Oakwood for this matter) being far from Cincinnati, it is an easy day-trip from the Dayton suburbs down into Cincy's core areas. Usually an hour or a little more down I-75. With the Dayton suburbs, you also are no more than an hour and a half to downtown Columbus. Mason to Columbus is at least 2 hours.

To wrap up, I'd say stick to looking at Oakwood if you want an older home with a walkable inner suburb. I'd stay away from Mason only because Dayton's Beavercreek and Centerville offer pretty much the same things. This means a much shorter commuter time for the same stuff. Also, resale for homes is actually not too bad around Wright-Patt (Beavercreek especially) because of the coming and goings of base personel and defense contractors.

Hope this helps and hope you have safe travels on your move across the Atlantic!

I never lived there but always loved Miamisburg..has a great aquatic center, close to shopping, yet has that rural feel, same about some parts of West Carrollton.
