I wouldn't be talking if I didn't have something lined up. Unemployment is high almost everywhere.

A lot of people move without jobs hoping things will get better. Congrats on having a job lined up. To me, the most favorable thing about this area is the reasonable cost of living. I also think there is something around here for just about anyone.

If you want to provide a housing budget, the area you will be working in and what length of commute you want, we might be able to help you narrow down your choices.

I would be working ~ 20 mins south of Dayton. I would prefer a house under $100k in a safe urban neighborhood. I am willing to compromise, however.

I would look at the South Park/Twin Towers neighborhoods just south of the Oregon District & Downtown, if looking to buy a house. The area's right off of 35 for the commute.

I think the Twin Towers neighborhood has really gone downhill. I don't think he'll find a house in his price range in the Oregon Dist. I'd look in the Belmont area. Kettering is also a possibility.

South Park and Fairgrounds neighborhoods first, followed by Belmont and Kettering. Kettering is an inner-ring suburb FYI.

I'm having trouble trying to find the Fairgrounds neighborhood, what streets border it?

Do you guys think the neighborhoods are dog friendly? Any dog parks around?

As far as the Kettering neighborhood goes, it looks like it is near a GM plant. Is that plant operational, is the neighborhood clean?

Here is a link to Downtown Urban Living with a list of places that might interest you: Downtown Dayton Partnership . Side note: I recently read an indie novella based in Downtown Dayton (don't have my kindle with me, can't remember title), quite a few downtown Dayton hangouts were mentioned. I thought that was pretty cool.

Kettering has been around for a long time. My son actually co-oped with the City of Kettering when he was attending UC Engineering some 30 years ago. It is still the largest suburb in the Dayton Metropolitan Area, as of 2010 a population of 56,000. The GM plant was probably in Moraine and is likely closed. But Kettering is large enough to subsist pretty well on its own.

I really like the Oregon District bordering downtown Dayton. Big fan of the tree lined brick streets. The cultural ammenities that Dayton brings to the table are impressive for a city of its size. If you do not find what you are looking for in the immediate area, have you looked at Dayton's southern suburbs?
