These were all educated, professional people I am describing.
Educated professional people in the Dayton area are OK with gays as long as they are in the stereotypical gay jobs: waiter or food service, medical support (nurse, aide, med-tech), florist, hairdresser, etc.

They do not consider open lesbians and gays their equals and wouldn't be accepting of them as co-workers on a basis of equality (though they would tolerate them on a sort of dont-ask/dont-tell basis). This would be the ame for lesbians and gays as, heaven forbid, bosses or managers. So ones advancement as an openly lesbian or gay person is pretty much nil...if you were even hired.

This is a sweeping generalization that is as far as I know unsupported by fact and more or less untestable. Dayton is probably about on par with any other Midwestern city, save Minneapolis or maybe parts of Chicago. Even then, as a previous poster mentioned, your experience may vary depending on who you interact with.

Almost all legitimate companies with more than a handful of employees have long established non-discrimination policies. A company that doesn't take them seriously is probably not worth working for.

Probably on par? Probably not. For Ohio I think Cleveland and maybe Columbus would be better for lgbtq folks. Midwest? Add Milwaukee to Chicago and the Twin Cities as being more gay-accepting vs gay-tolerant.

I don't know I would say Chicago, Columbus, and Minneapolis would be the most "open minded" cities in the midwest. Columbus has a the highest LGBT pop per capita in the midwest. A statement like you made would be unfathomable there.

And how typically Daytonian to impute elitism to a wish for locals to be tolerant if not embracing of a different lifestyle.

I don't wish anything for Dayton anymore. The locals embedded in the local culture are just too stupid. The town deserves to decline to a miserable death.

No, more like you took one person's word as gospel and ran with it. Ask gay & lesbian people in the area how they feel before painting the entire town with a broad brush.
