We are a couple in our mid 30's moving to Huber Heights within the next month or so. We have already found a house to purchase based on recommendations by our realtor. However, I would love to hear more opinions on Huber Heights from some locals. We have a newborn baby, so we are going with neighborhood of The Villages of Pheasant Ridge. I work from home, and my boyfriend is in outside sales, so he will be traveling all around Dayton. We felt this was a pretyy central location for his territory.

I would also love some recommendations on daycare in the area and maybe some suggestions on how to meet new people in the area, specifically other new moms. Any suggestions on things to do or places to go/eat would be a huge help, as well.

I appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Thanks!

Well, if you are a young couple, just starting out, with not much money yet, then HH is a good place to start out. It is a very low-cost, no frills, place to live...sort of like the Wal-Mart of suburbs. However, there are some people who refer to the area as "Huber-tucky" - so take that as you will. Where are you moving from?

Huber Heights is not as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, parts of it are not as as well kept as they used to be, but a majority of Huber is functional. Pheasant Ridge is a newer community (as you probably know). Most of the new-new development is taking place up by I-70 and Carriage Trails, but I personally like the Forest Ridge and Pheasant Ridge areas because they are closer to major shopping, the base, and downtown.

Schools are just OK, but again, functional and not in bad shape. They are replacing all of the old school buildings with new builds. Part with state money and part local. For now, schools would only be a resale concern until your baby hits kindergarten.

Basic shopping can be found in Huber Heights, especially at Old Troy Pike and I-70. Gander Mountain, Bath & Body Works, Elder-Beerman, Kohls, and other typical strip center and mall stores can be found here. Kroger Grocery is located at Needmore Rd. and Brandt Pike and is certainly the closest mainline grocery store to you. More eateries can be found at I-75 and Benchwood Rd exit in neighboring Butler Twp/Vandalia. Locally, the strip is known as Miller Lane, but really it's at the Benchwood exit and runs north parallel to I-75 from there.

Beavercreek has the Mall at Fairfield Commons (exit 17 on I-675). The mall is nice, but has been struggling with stores in the mall recently due to competition from The Greene Town Center (also in Beavercreek, exit 10 on I-675), a newer open-air lifestyle center. It's a little more upscale then the two indoor malls with higher end restaurants and department store. Much of the big-box stores that cannot be found in Huber Heights can be found near Fairfield Commons or further down south at the Dayton Mall. The Greene is more in-fill, so there is little in the way of big-box strip centers there.

Pluses of the indoor malls is their layout are conducive to walking. I think they have new mom programs there as well. I would google "Mall at Fairfield Commons" or the "Dayton Mall" (which is at I-75 and OH-725 south of Dayton in Miami Twp) to get their website and see what they have. Pluses of The Greene would be its outdoor grass plaza and fountain. Kids are always playing there in the summer. Also is a site for local music and they have one "headliner" act there each year.

Things to do should be heating up more with the approach of warmer weather. I recommend the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team. Longest consecutive sell-out streak in professional sports. Games are extremely family friendly. Located in downtown Dayton.

Another hidden gem is the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in North Dayton. Not in the best area, but well worth it for the kids and activities they offer.

Second Street Market, the bike trails, festivals, the U.S. National Air Force Museum, Oregon Historic District (for an evening out for two), Dayton Flyers Basketball, and other events litter the area. Sometimes it just takes some looking and taking a gamble.

Hope you like it in the Dayton area and Huber Heights specifically. Good luck with the purchase and move.

SmartGXL, we are moving from Pittsburgh, PA.

Wrightflyer, I truly appreciate you taking the time to offer all of your advice and input. This is a huge help, and I will definitely take up your recommendations. We visited Dayton last weekend and had a brief tour of the area. I was pleasantly surprised at how much Dayton has to offer. People ask me why in the world would I move to Dayton, and I think these people have never visited Dayton. Dayton has a lot to offer, and I am looking forward to beginning a new life there with my family. Again, thank you for your reply. I already like Dayton because I know there are good people who live there!

Wrightflyer's response is an accurate assessment in my estimation!

I've lived in the Dayton area since 1996. My parents live in Fairborn and my brother and I went to Fairborn Schools. Fairborn is mostly an older community of military retirees due to Wright Patterson AFB. I bought a house in Quail Hollow a couple years ago and have been enjoying it ever since. Quail Hollow is a housing area literally the next street over from Forest Ridge. Both these neighbourhoods are right across Kitridge Rd from the Pheasant Ridge area. There are lots of families around here with children. Quail Hollow/Forest Ridge was originally developed for Dayton city employees (e.i police, fire ... I am a nurse) to live within the city limits but their children could go to schools other than Dayton Public Schools ... I'm not sure if Pheasant Ridge is the same way since it's a newer community. My house belongs in an HOA and they hold community events such as Trick-or-Treat and Easter egg hunts.

This area is pretty close to almost everything!
Route 4 is just a few minutes away and gains you access to I-675, I-75, I-70.
I-675 gives you access to smaller communities (e.i. Fairborn, WPAFB, Beavercreek, Centerville, Fairfield Commons Mall, The Greene). Columbus is about 1hr 20 min away and Cininnati is about 1hr away. The Dayton International Airport is about 20-30 minutes away from our housing area via I-70.

Dayton Children's Hospital is 5-10 min drive right down Valley Street. Travel just a little farther and you start into downtown where Fifth-Third Field (Dayton Dragons), Schuester Center/ Victoria Theatre (performing arts), and Riverscape are located and just across the river is the Dayton Art Institute (DAI).

Here's a list of things I've enjoyed in the Dayton area:
Five Rivers Metroparks
Riverscape
Fifth Third Field
Schuester Center
Air Force Museum with IMAX theatre
Boonshoft Museum
Dayton Art Institute
Wright State University and the Nutter Center
Yellow Springs - Young's Jersey Dairy
Annual festivals: Dayton Celtic Festival, Greek Festival, Oktoberfest at DAI, Fair at New Boston, Ohio Renaissance Festival

A great website : ActiveDayton.com | Dayton things to do, restaurants, music, movies, bars, clubs, events

I could go on and on and I'm sure I've forgotten many things. If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.

We moved to Dayton 11 years ago with a military relocation and we are still here.

When we were new in town I joined an organization called The Family Network. It's a large group of young families. We went on hayrides, hikes, parties, playdates, you name it we did it. We've outgrown it, but I got plugged in with moms who had kids my kids age and we're all still friends. They have a Facebook page, that would probably be the easiest way to find them.

There is a lot to do here. Cincinnati and Columbus are close by.

SW Huber is definitely a part to avoid! Buford area around Glenburn Green is off the chain!

HH police WILL TELL YOU THIS. Almost all of the police calls are dispatched to that part of town.
