For those who don't know it but maybe would have an interest.... Thus endeth the Notre Dame nuns "Villa Julienne" in Dayton:

Dayton Daily News : Former Julienne High School being demolished today (http://m.daytondailynews.com/dayton/pm_20554/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=3ckuFIQN - broken link)

Well, there was a motherhouse in Reading. And, a college in Northern Kentucky.

And, I keep thinking of the people who were dunned for donations to build the Catholic school system.

Oh, please. The Sisters of Notre Dame is one the largest religious orders of Christians in the world. They demolished some dumpy high school in a slum that hasn't been used for ages? Bid deal.

Well. While I'm sorry to hear that the building is being demolished, its demise has very little to do with the Sisters of Notre Dame and is of less than marginal interest in the Cincinnati forum.

Slum? Not that long ago, across the street from the deanery. Indeed, at least one million dollar legacy went to said parish church. I think they are still using the interest.

Curious why there's nothing on the Dayton forum about this ...

It's a shame the school was leveled; it was still functional and beautiful and I hope the stained glass and sculptures were preserved. But it sounds like the Dayton school district was bound and determined to get rid of it, no matter if they found a buyer for the building or not. Seems like some folks were hoping to hinge Five Oaks' revival on the school.

^^ Dayton is very demolition happy at the moment, and I believe they get federal funds to pay for (some/all of) it.

That doesn't surprise me. It was demolition happy 35 years ago (!) when I first moved there.

The thing is, it seems like what's being demolished is not the kind of thing people wanted to see demolished. (The rubber factory comes to mind.)

However, I do believe the nuns no longer own Villa Madonna College; in fact I think it's used for something else now.

Especially since it has been closed since ... 1973.

Everyone wants all these buildings "preserved" but they want to do it with OPM.

Not so. Dayton Christian used it until 2004. At least that's the date posted in Wikipedia. (And, here I was thinking it was about 20 years, not 30. ) After that Dayton Public Schools used it, too. What happened around 1973 was that the nuns moved their operations downtown.

Now, part of the point is, with the right effort, "Villa Julienne" would be in operation today right there on that hill.

For one thing, a high school once proposed for the northern edge of town was never built, and just within the last year or so someone was newspaper talking about starting a Catholic school of some sort about 3-4 miles farther north as there was nothing. For another thing, the nuns once had a huge tract of land -- enough for another big building at the foot of the hill.

Lemme tell ya.... Some (few) years ago I was killing some time in the library (Cincinnati) and I got into looking through a newspaper there. There was a story about the Hindu faith planning to build a Temple complex (school included) north of Cincinnati. The next announcement was that of a new Catholic high school somewhere between Middletown and Hamilton, as I recall both of which had Catholic high schools and which then could be closed.

Why? Well, because "that's what the people wanted." More accurately, that's what a few people dreamed up.
