We are in St. Cloud. (I believe it is part of a lost circle of Hell from The Inferno by Dante). We are wedged between Kissimmee (the land of Mickey Mouse) and swampland heading east toward the Atlantic Ocean.

You have to visit Cox Arboretum in the spring when the crab apples are in bloom. The air is perfumed. A really nice relatively small arboretum with an outstanding collection of spring blooms.

I am leaving New York City as soon as I can. New York is taking the life out of me. I am considering moving to
Dayton, Ohio. Is there anyone who lives in this area? Could you give me any info on Dayton? I am interested in jobs, crime rate, and any other info you might know.

Your reply will be very much appreciated.

Hi Linda630--

The best job fields in Dayton are either if you're with the feds (Wright-Patt AFB), in education (UD, Sinclair, Wright State, and too many other minor colleges to count), or with some sort of other professional degree - doctors and other healthcare especially, engineering, law, finance, you get the idea.

Manufacturing is making somewhat of a comeback, but it pays a fraction of what it used to.

As far as crime, just steer clear of anything within Dayton's city limits (with the exceptions of downtown, Patterson Park, and possibly South Park) and you'll do just fine. As a downtown resident, I suggest that unless you want to live actually in downtown itself, then locate in the suburbs.

The suburbs, with the exception of Trotwood, are doing well. Englewood is heading downhill, I think. The rest - Oakwood, Kettering, Bellbrook, Centerville, Beavercreek - are doing just fine. The biggest developments are in Miami Township (to the south) and Beavercreek (to the east).

Although Moraine and West Carrollton are pretty quiet crime-wise, I'd advise living against there because every time the wind blows the wrong way, the smell from the damn incinerator wafts over those towns, and you can smell that garbage for miles.

Hope this helps.

Good grief. So McPherson Town, Oregon District, Saint Anne's Hill, Linden Heights, Belmont, Walnut Hills are all somewhere to be avoided? Do not listen to this cat when it comes to safe/unsafe areas. He hasn't a clue.

..heh...did you just play "pin the tail on the Donkey" with a US map?

If NYC is taking the life out of you, Dayton is a good place to go and be zombie...the city of the living dead.

I lived in Dayton for two years and am an former New Yorker. I am in Cincinnati now.

I lived in Astoria when it was a true Greek/Italian neighborhood, and in Long Island City long before it became trendy. Dayton is one of the worst places I ever lived. It's a shell of a once great city that has been in decline for years. If you are hell bent on Ohio the at least consider Cincinnat, Cleveland, or Columbus to find some sense of the amenities you are leaving behind in NYC. I live in Cincinnati, and though I find it smallish in many respects, it does have big city amenities. Same can be said for the other two Cs.

I agree with Tom Jones, while I love Dayton, coming from NYC Columbus or Cincinnati may be a better place. I currently live in Columbus and absolutely love it.

Linda630 has two postings listed. I just read the other one. Cleveland is mentioned in passing. Maybe she read something nice in Cleveland.
