A while ago, I saw a historical map with very little detail that suggested that in addition to a former trolley that ran along or parallel to Third St./Linden Ave./Dayton-Xenia Rd., there was also one that went along Fifth St./Burkhardt Rd./Kemp Rd. I know that things on rails often have troubles climbing hills, and given the grade it would have to climb at the country line, I just doubted that this really used to exist. It was also unclear as to where the eastern terminus of this route would've been, since given where populations were at the time of the streetcar era, it would've made more sense to run along New Germany-Trebein to one or both of those former villages. Since it seems that some of the people who post here have access to a bunch of historical maps, I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this route.

Try Dayton Trolleys. There's some amazing information and tons of pix there.

From what I remember, the current trolleybus routes are the same as or very similar to the streetcar routes. Dayton has had electric trolleybuses since the 30s.

I used to drink at the Trolley Stop. That's about it.

I know! I thought that was one of the coolest things about the place.

The electric trolley along E Third St. went as far as almost to Smithville. And the E. Fifth/Huffman/Burkhardt one went E. Fifth to Martz, up Huffman to Shedbourne, right on Burkhardt, right on Cosler, then right on Tuttle, down Smithville back to Huffman, and turned on S Jersey before returning to E. Fifth. I rode it all the time when I was growing up.

Too bad you didn't notice the clean air all over town.

That is one advantage of the trolleybuses (and the lack of noise), although that electricity does have to be created somehow, somewhere. Yeah, the overhead wires are unattractive, but modern life isn't always aesthetically pleasing.

That's about the only thing clean about Dayton. A lot of neighborhoods in Dayton are trashy, with boarded up houses and shuttered business districts. And it's clean because the vast majority of manufacturing left town. Now do tell me how joblessness is a good thing?

I've been hearing about Cinci putting in a trolley, not sure if it is definite.
