It's so, so East Dayton. Low class. At least she wasn't offering meth (facetiously.)

Around there I'd probably do similarly - offer a low class reward. She wanted to get the attention of local residents from the blocks around there. She succeeded.

You got to do what you've got to do I guess.

But yeah, beer and cigs. No better way to bring the masses to a cause haha

Around there... I'd do exactly likewise.

Lose a dog around Beavercreek or Centerville - reward with a free Starbucks or Panera gift card.

Dayton Stops Plowing/Salting Residential Streets (paywall)
Quote:
In an effort to save salt and budget, the city of Dayton is not treating side streets as new snowfall occurs. East Second St. between Findlay and Washington Park is snow covered.

Coming to grip with a salt shortage, city officials this week said crews will continue to clean up main thoroughfares and bridges but will be forced to neglect residential areas.
I'll just repost my comment on the DDN's page here: if the city stopped blowing money on gobbling up empty buildings for the land bank and if they stopped blowing money for Nan Whaley's retreat in Cincinnati... they might have enough money to plow the residential streets. Just a thought...

Yes, Dayton IS actually pretty trashy and they don't call it Dirttown for nothin', ya know?

However...I do think the story was cute and actually somewhat down-home. Sort of like that women in Flint, MI, who was raising rabbits for food, in "Roger & Me".

...& is SNL still on TV?

Yeah, I know. SNL was once subversive counterculture effluvia - when I was a kid in 1976 I felt kinda dirty but cool watching it, sort of the same vibe as sneaking underground comix home. Now it's firmly part of the establishment and Idiocracy level "humor."

I wish they'd cancel it.

This is an amazingly awful story:

Mauling victim lived on high alert, sought help | www.daytondailynews.com

Especially if you have access behind the paywall and have a chance to read the whole article. It's amazing how long these issues were able to persist, and the fact that virtually nothing was done by the police, animal resources, or anyone to prevent it. Hopefully this will get some people looking at our current animal regulations.

Not having a paid subscription, this is pure guesswork.

If she did actually have 50 cats in there (or even 20), she was probably in a very tight situation if she couldn't possibly let them out without a chance the dogs would get them. We might even assume that some were cats with kittens. Let's assume she more or less took in strays and cast offs with a hope of finding homes for them.

Strays especially could be allowed to run most of the time as long as they were fed, just not in zero temperatures. However, with dogs loose next door, it wouldn't be the best of ideas.

The first question not answered (maybe it's behind the paywall) is why did she throw on a coat that morning and go out in the bitter cold?

It's absolutely what I would expect in a s+++hole like Dayton.

To answer the peasant, why in the sam hell SHOULDN'T a citizen be able to walk out of their house absolutely any time they chose?

The perps - dog owners - should both be tried for manslaughter. Pieces of human trash both.
