The rise of Dayton?s Ahiska Turkish community - Dayton Business Journal

There are 10,000 Ahiska Turkish in the US, and 2,400 live in the Dayton area. They are currently persecuted in their homeland of Georgia (the country, not the state haha), and now are finding acceptance here in Dayton. Many work as truck drivers or in other logistics-focused industries. They are also big players in the community, from owning and operating Salar (and its building) in the OD and Pasha at the Greene to creating a Turkish community center in Huffman on 5th St in a former recreation center.

Grocery stores in the area are starting to take note, and are offering more products to cater to their needs. And more restaurants, like Shish Wraps, are opening up as well as a variety of other businesses. They are renovating homes in Old North Dayton and making the community better.

I'm beginning to think Welcome Dayton is the best initiative this city has ever pursued!
Tell that to the Conservatives who think "They are here for a free ride"(just as they do with anybody else, really)

Just another reason to leave Dayton as quickly as possible.

I'm all for immigration. Legal immigration.

This "humanitarian crisis" is a direct result of the current and previous presidential administration's absolute failure to secure the southern border. Which not only leaves our country wide open to a wave of illegal immigrants but also it's a security problem - anyone can cross that border, including terrorists, etc.

And before anyone tries to say it's too difficult to immigrate here legally... about a million people manage to pull it off each year... the legitimate way.

They're children, and essentially refugees. Columbus, Minneapolis & other successful cities have taken on large refugee populations and prospered, and Dayton could use more people. The humanitarian crisis comes from civil war and feuding cartels (many of whom execute entire villages) and has nothing to do with "border security".

^I will say I don't know enough about the issue to discuss it, especially the children crossing.

But if shelters really are overbooked along the border, and these kids just need a place to stay for a couple weeks before they get loaded into an army jet back to their home country, then why not let them stay in Dayton? We have many vacant and underutilized spaces which are government owned that they can use. Take some of the nicer foreclosed houses and let them stay there. And the kids can be brought in to / leave from Wright-Patt.
