But where's the closest place to Dayton where a guy could get a hotel room with a view of some mountains nearby? Kentucky? Tennessee? West Virginia? Thinking of taking a road trip this weekend (rather impulsively, if that wasn't obvious) and just wondering what my best bet would be.

You literally just want to go somewhere and look at mountains, correct?

Well, it'd be nice if you could drive up there and walk around a bit, I guess. Or at least have some "scenic lookouts" and such nearby. Doesn't necessarily have to be a full-fledged resort like Smoky Mountain, Pigeon Forge, etc.

North Bend State Park: North Bend State Park

It's right on a 70 mile paved trail and is most definitely in the mountains.

Wow... rates are really affordable too. That place looks great.

I swear Amanda and I aren't shills for North Bend State Park.

Haha, we've stayed there before (in the cabins) and had a pretty good time. I went antiquing and my husband did some astrophotography. It is a beautiful area, so bring a camera!

Aaaaaand... no reservations available this weekend. Definitely have to keep this one in mind for the future, though.

Other ideas?

I plan my vacations around historical things I want to see, so this may be a little far away for you, but Harpers Ferry WV looks amazing and is on the list of places I want to visit.
