In the Cincinnati room, I posted on an appropriate thread -- in answer to what I consider would be an important matter, namely, "What kind of people are they? -- that generally speaking the people of Cincinnati are "pretty nice."

The people of Dayton can be pretty nice, too, although one might not be able to figure that out from the postings in this Dayton room.

My first (discovered) "Happy Birthday" wishes for this year were posted on a Dayton site known as DHBO (not facebook). It's not a common type of topic there.

Now, if you have an account there and propose to run and go look, please note, CarpathianPeasant is my internet ID -- I use it everywhere except two places where I use special ones. I use a special (unrelated) ID for anything based in Dayton, so you won't find any "Carpathian Peasant" there.

I've got mixed opinions on this.

I used to say there is this sullen passive aggressiveness/snarkyness here. The waitstaff was atrocious. I did not like the locals. I actually still don't like the locals.

But during my hiking and walking, which Ive done a lot more of since my partner passed back in 2009, I of course meet a lot of people on the trail. I usually nod hello or say hello, or if i'm riding my bike I'll wave at walkers or joggers.

They almost invariably wave back, nod back, say' hi' back, even remark on the weather. Very rarely does this not happen.

Now, that I call Midwest Nice. Honestly pleasant civil people.

I compare this to Louisville, where I do the same thing and people try to ignore me or look at me funny, like i'm some sort of happy-go-lucky idiot or something. Just weird. So I have to revise my negative opinion about Daytonians and say that they are actually fairly civil and courteous.

People here are pretty damn friendly compared to the coasts. Sometimes it crosses the line to them being in your personal business, but I've learned to appreciate it more than the cold, self absorbed types you find in California or the east coast cities.

I can't comment simply because I lack experience with people in other locales.

But I can say thank you to both Nat510 and DS for posting their views on the subject.

Natural510 is on point here - I'll take the "Midwest Nice" over either of the coasts, any day of the week.

I've noticed that people are far friendlier in the suburbs than the city, as well - a casual drive through the neighborhood will almost always net you a couple waves from walkers, the mail truck, or the school bus driver... even if you don't know them, it's more an acknowledgement that you're there.

Who do you all want to kick? ...The one with the one leg or the one terrified the landlord would descend on her? (The latter assessment is a wild guess.)
