Dayton Trivia Thread! - hoping this will be stickeyed (Huber Heights: real estate, houses)

Stealing the idea from the Cincy forum, I thought I'd post a thread where we each ask a trivia question of our fellow forumers, and whomever answers the question correctly is able to pose another trivia question.

Only rule I have is that all answers be cited when posted by the winner. Basically, provide a link.



So here goes!

Q - which suburban neighborhood, located in the Dayton region, is considered to be America's largest community of all brick homes?

More likely Huber Heights. Oakwood was built 100 years ago (before brick ranch).

Actually, that source may be misleading. At least some brick ranches are not really brick houses, they are simply brick veneer homes. In other words, they're a sort of cheaper building with real brick for siding. I don't know if this is true of Huber Heights or not, but it is true of some. They could have been built more cheaply using aluminum siding, but people wanted brick houses.

There are two advantages for sure to brick houses v. frame houses. One is that if you have a frame house amid other frame houses, if your neighbor's house catches fire, your house is also jeopardized. Using more than the minimum three feet of easement around a building (to help the fire department) helps with this, but there's no way of telling beforehand how a fire will run. The other disadvantage is, if you have a frame house (the usual kind not one with more expensive seasoned wood) you have to paint it every so often. Paint doesn't cost that much, but many people wouldn't be able to paint a house, especially a two-story place with an attic and dormers.


Okay.... Trivia.... The father of the Wright Brothers was a bishop of the United Brethren church. Around the time of the invention of the airplane, the church members broke into two factions with the majority of the people wanting to change some of the rules of the church. That group broke off and merged (variously) with another denomination. Bishop Wright's smaller conservative element still exists and they have a university (and this has been mentioned on this message board). Where is it?

Nope. You are probably thinking of the seminary that was out that way. Think college/university and someplace else.

^I also would have guessed the United Theological Seminary off Salem Ave, because it is part of the Methodist Church, and I'm assuming the merger would have come from the separation from the Brethren Church.

Because this is a college/university that was located someplace else (I'm not going to Google this, so I'm probably way off base), the only area I can think of that would fit would be near New Castle, IN where the Wrights originally came from and where Wilbur was born. The only religious college/university near there I can think of would be Earlham in Richmond, IN, although I can't imagine that being the correct answer....

You're right. Earlham is not correct.

It's the group that "stayed true to the faith" that has the school, and I'm certain I posted it in these pages.
