Dayton area apartment suggestions?
I'm moving to the Dayton area (new job at wright-patt) and am looking for apartment suggestions. I'm thinking I want to stay out of Dayton proper, and want to keep my rent under $600 (ideally around $500, but I could be flexible if necessary). Any ideas?

Beavercreek will probably be out of your price range as many of its apartment complexes are new and IMO, rather expensive. Fairborn wouldn't be bad (just stay away from Arlington Village) as it has many student apartments close to the base. But if you want to stay away from that, then Kettering is your best bet.
Kettering is an established community with a range of housing and rental options. Many of its apartment and multi-family units are older, but seem in rather decent condition (at least when I drive by them). The community is probably only 10-20 minutes from WPAFB depending on what side of Kettering you are living. Kettering offers many parks and has a local rec center.

Thanks for your reply. I should also have mentioned that all of Fairborn is excluded as well. I wasn't impressed with what I saw when visiting the base, and everyone I've talked to has recommended to stay away. Actually, the place that currently looks like it's at the top of my list is in Beavercreek (The Village on Beavercreek, previously Eastgate Manor). While it is near the top of my price range, it is offset by Beavercreek not having an income tax. (Am I correct on that?) Kettering's 2.25% income tax pretty much kills any savings from cheaper rent. I might also mention that a commute isn't a big concern of mine, but I assume finding decent apartments in smaller towns is more difficult -- I certainly haven't found much of a web presence.

Yeah, Beavercreek right now has no income tax. That may change in the future, but I don't see it being more than 1-1.5%. I know where Eastgate Manor is, off of Patterson across from Woodhaven (my old home! )
While I've never been in one of their apartments, it does look like an overall nice community of older buildings. I don't think they have a ton of amenities, but I could be wrong and you probably know that by now. Apartmentguide.com seems to list most of the complexes in Beavercreek. And yeah, Fairborn can have its bad parts (like Arlington Village).

Just noticed this post is somewhat old and you may have already moved. My original reply: I'm wondering why people are letting you know to stay away from certain areas. If you contact someone in real estate, they won't do that. You have the right to determine where you live based on your specific reality and your needs/wants/desires for the home and environment you choose. Fairborn is a smaller town with admittedly a mobile community due to the base where people transition out every few years. That said, there are both apartments and single-family homes in both Fairborn and the surrounding areas. Consider as well your commute; many small towns nearby could have rentals as well. Good luck and if you have questions, please let me know.

Reason: added that post is old and yet still wanted to reply.

Another area without a city income tax is Washington Township and Miami Township, at the southern end of I-675. There are apartments along the OH 725 corridor, Lyons Rd and south along Yankee Street, Springboro Pike and Washington Church Roads. This area should have things in your price range and a bit higher, too. Its a very convenient area, with about a 20-30 minute commute (on the freeway its fast, but the surface traffic could slow you down).
