Check out the suburbs of Beavercreek and Kettering. Not far from Dayton, and very safe with good school systems.

I live in Centerville and am very happy. Also Kettering and Oakwood are nice and safe. Centerville is safe and has great schools. Good Luck!

Huber Heights is a nice middle class suburb.

To the far south of the city, Centerville and Springboro would be good fits. Centerville has older homes and expensive newer homes; Springboro mostly newer homes.
To the near south, Oakwood is a older suburb, close to downtown. It's generally safe, although there is some pretty crime in spots. Kettering is next to Oakwood and some sections are nicer than others.
To the far far south, you could live in northern Cincinnati in Mason or West Chester (it's less than an hour's drive from downtown Dayton), both safe with great schools.
To the far north, Troy also fits the bill.
It all depends on where you plan to work and whether you want an urban, rural, or suburban lifestyle.

Personally, I think Tipp City is a little nicer and more upscale then Troy. The former fits in more with Centerville and such, while the latter goes along the lines of a northern Kettering or Huber Heights.
Also, don't forget Bellbrook and Beavercreek to the east-southeast of Dayton along I-675.
Personally, I wouldn't live all the way down in Mason or West Chester. You can find the same housing stock closer to Dayton, and the only benefits would be that you are closer to some higher end shopping at Kenwood and downtown Cincy. WC or Mason only make sense if your spouse is commuting one way and you the other direction.

I didn't mean to be all inclusive in my recommendations -- your additions are spot on.
West Chester and Mason have a few things going for them, besides shopping and commuting distances. Mason has more higher-end newer homes than almost any location in Dayton, if that's a priority. Mason and West Chester are closer to the Cincinnati airport if someone will be traveling a lot on business and will want direct flights. Both are closer to Cincinnati's higher education options if one wants a graduate degree, etc. etc.
I personally would not live there and commute to Dayton, but I work with people who have made that choice.

^I understand where you are coming from now in terms of Mason and West Chester. Yeah, Mason does have some pretty high end neighborhoods (Homerama 2008!)
Thanks for the clarification, and sorry if I sounded like I was calling you out for forgetting something.

I live in Washington Twp that just fought off a merger effort by Centerville. Washington Twp and Centerville share services such as fire protection, recreation services and schools. (schools are EXCELLENT!) While property taxes are slightly higher in the township, townships have no authority to levy income taxes, so you don't have those to worry about. The township contracts with the Montgomery Co. Sherriff's Dept. for police protection (as many townships in Ohio do) Centerville has it's own city police department.
