Because that was a big part of my life in NC and I would just like to find something like that around here to fill that void. Thanks

Being a horse person in the Dayton area, I think I can help you!
The Dayton MetroParks system has two riding centers I believe, Englewood and Carriage Trail. Beyond that, there are a fair amount of private barns that I know of around where I am, in North Dayton. I'm sure there are some in other areas around Dayton.

Englewood area

Anyways, thanks in advance. And to anyone else with some opinions on the place, I'd be happy to hear what you have to say. Cheers.

I've lived in Clayton for my whole life, and I must say I love our area very much. I am a student at Northmont High and enjoy it. We have great athletics and academics, it's only the facilities are lacking. The general area is very nice though, I love the old Englewood section and the Englewood dam is a nice plus. There are new developments right along 70 by Walmart, but there is still plenty of country land right out by the high school. And my solution to the "mall problem" in our area - I don't go that often. And I am still living to talk about it.

other places like miamisburg and west carrollton are ok but a little more runned down...trying to refurbish neighborhoods.
kettering is also nice but a little more runned down. as is moraine (violence also in moraine).
personally i loved centerville and would live there if i werent a poor college student down town dayton...not so much

Let me guess your in ILL being a saluki?
I also think you have experienced any of things you mentioned here in your posts. Funny thing is I have been to most of these areas you mentioned and i have NEVER seen or been involved in any crimes such as you name. Then again Im not a gangster nor do I take part in criminal activity.

west: very very violent. stabbing, shooting, murders etc... consistantly
>>Oh really? So everyday there is a murder? Stabbings you say too? Wow I didn't once experience these when I was up that way earlier in 2007.
north: (harrison twnshp etc) pretty violent also. lots of stabbing there
>>Hmm more hype than reality? I took some streets as I made my way around Dayton those days and not once did I see anything you mention.
south: (suburbs) very nice. im from centerville which has like a 98% graduation rate, excellent schools, hardly any violence...excellent place to a rasie a family - but very expensive.
>>Agreed its nice ..Depending on your take on it. People who are not Caucasian can some times be made to feel they do not belong. Examples, police tailing you around the areas even though you have lived there almost a decade. Don't fool your self ,violence happens right in South Dayton too.. Some of it gets under reported. Robbery, rape, drug transactions, domestic violence. sheriffs killing there wives and covering it up.. etc etc
>>Are people considered trash in your book because they are not fortunate as you that has had opportunity and a better playing hand?
>>And yes there real estate is overpriced. I so agree.
other places like miamisburg and west carrollton are ok but a little more runned down...trying to refurbish neighborhoods.
>>Violence here too..
kettering is also nice but a little more runned down. as is moraine (violence also in moraine).
>>Violence in both cities you named too.
personally i loved centerville and would live there if i werent a poor college student down town dayton...not so much[/quote]
>>My point is.. I think you speak more from here say and not from real experience when you speak of the areas which have a more HIGHER minority count. But I can understand it somewhat when once has lived insulated a majority of their life and fear what they do not know of.

Chrysler's chemical spill is living in my basement
in the thriving city of Dayton and has apparently been doing so for a number of years. The EPA says that they will clean it up and bill Chrysler later. I'd like them to double check the soil in a year but that won't happen. State Department of Health isn't sure whether tests can be done to see what damage this chemical (TCE) has done to my liver and kidneys. The chemical has reached the Miami River, according to the state department. I've written the mayor, my state representative and called Public Health. Public health had no idea what I was talking about; the other two parties ignored me. The entire neighborhood is affected and other than two articles in the Dayton Daily News, the episode is being ignored. My house now isn't worth half of what I paid for it. I regret the day I moved to Dayton. Never thought I'd say that but there it is.

That is just plain ridiculous! Like other urban cities, there can be some problems. However, downtown Dayton is not bad at all. There are not bars on all the windows except the jailhouse downtown. Most people who get into a bad situation downtown are looking for trouble, not the ones who are walking around peacefully. Downtown and surrounding areas have so much potential to be better than they already are. We are rich in the arts, such as the Schuster Center and the Victoria Theatre. We have riverscape, which offers fun family and community activities all year long. There's the Dragon Stadium to catch a ball game at. There's also such great Mom and Pop's places to eat, like Tanks Bar and Grill, The Trolley Stop, and Franco's Italian. Downtown has some fun hole-in-the-wall bars. My personal favorite is J-Alans. Great music, Great Bartenders, and no cover. Downtown has dance clubs too. Most people who judge downtown Dayton as "being dangerous" have probaly never spent more than an hour of their life here.

Dayton is making a comeback just like other Ohio cities. How is that new mall coming along down there....... The Greene? I heard it is a new type of shopping like the Easton Town Centre in Columbus.

In a word, cold.
But it is coming along fine. The place was packed around Christmas. Could maybe use a few more stores like they promised us but its not a total bomb. Still don't know how the other malls will take it though. Couple stores like Eddie Baurer, Bananna Republic, and Talbots moved locations, but otherwise we're doing ok.
Isn't Crocker Park supposed to be the same thing as The Greene?

Ok, so since there seem to be quite a few of you that know your way around the city and the outlying areas, I have a question. We are a late 20's/early 30's married couple. We have no children, and do not intend to. We are both working on degrees, and plan to move to Dayton two years from now when he is finished with school. We want to find a house in a historic part of town. We do not want to be in "the bible belt" communities that have been mentioned earlier. We just want to live somewhere where there is a strong sense of community but not everyone has a 2.5 kids family. Areas with more empty nesters would be fine also. We definately want a fixer upper house that we can restore to its original glory.
Any suggestions? We want to narrow down areas now, and hopefully buy something in the next year or so. That way we can get all the renovations done by the time we are ready to move. I appreciate any advice!

Thanks for the info. I have heard it was a new type of shopping for Dayton. Some of the renderings looked very nice.
