I need some info about Troy or any small surrounding towns. My husband has put in for a job transfer to the area and if he gets this transfer we'll be moving. I'd like to know anything that will be helpful in making this a smooth move for my family. Things like what area's are good areas to raise your children, the better school districts, when was the last Tornado (if there are any) What the weather is like there.... What housing is like (I personally prefer small town) We'd want to rent first and work on buying something once we've established ourselves.... Things of that nature.
Well, i would help you, but i'm not sure i've even heard of Troy, Ohio, nor do i know where it is. Have some patience and i'm sure someone will try to help.
Ok, sorry about the wait. I must have overlooked this thread.
Troy is a decent community with middle to upper-middle income families. It's schools are efficent which is still pretty good, but they are not as nice as Tipp City to the south. Just south on I-75 is Tipp City, which is a little higher on the family income scale (Warning! That opinion is based off wikipedia/census information). If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick Tipp City since it is closer to Dayton's amenities such as shopping, food, and other events. Some of the surrounding countryside (areas like Pleasant Hill, Covington, Ludlow Falls, and Casstown) is said to be extremly beautiful, but I've never been out in those areas so that's a second hand opinion. Your best bet is to take a few days, if you can, and visit. Drive around the surrounding countryside and towns and see if you find something you like.
Hope that information helps. Again, sorry this is a little late. Good luck with the move!
troy is kind of big, so if you like smaller towns / cities, then i would recommend moving to tipp city which is just south of troy, it would be a ten minute drive on the highway to work. tipp city schools are great, there's not a lot of crime, drugs, etc around it & is a great place to live. the schools are wonderful and so are the people. there is really nothing to complain about for tipp city.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer me with any info you could. I'm not familiar with anything Ohio except Miamisburg and Columbus lol.... Those only because I've been there. I really wish we could take a few days to just go visit and see what's out there. It would sure make decisions easier. My husband is waiting to hear back from HR on whether we are making this move or not. Part of me is ready for a change, but the other part of me is unsure lol.

Tipp City, I've been told by a few friends that Tipp City is a beautiful place to visit, I wasn't aware it was close to Troy thank you for that information. Schools are extremely important so it is nice to know they have a good school system. If my husband does decide we are going to be moving I will certainly have to insist on checking out that area. 10 minute commute is a lot closer than the commute he makes now to work. Now it's about a 30 minute commute each way. I'm the one who is lucky enough to have a 10 minute commute lol and it's great :-)
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions and the advice on the area more suited for my wants.

I would concur with the above information and drill that down a bit more- both cities have vibrant and growing historic downtown areas- Troy's is bigger- Troy being the County Seat for Miami County. You will find more of everything in Troy. Tipp City is small town life.
Real estate in both areas is affordable, Tipp City trends slightly higher. You will find everything from beautifully restored historic mansions, to post war mass produced subdivisions, to brand spanking new McMansions and everything in between, in both cities.
Depending on where you are from, the rest of the country typically finds Ohio real estate a refreshing change, price-wise.
Commute wise- wrightflyer makes an important point: Tipp City is closer to Dayton. Not such a big deal typically, except keep in mind that both cities are surrounded by farmland. I-75 is the only fast way to get there- all surrounding roads are rural, 2 lane state routes. Nicely maintained, but can be winding and not easy to pass slow moving traffic and farm equipment. The occasional wreck on I-75, or construction tie-ups along there, and it's off to the country. I'm not suggesting this is a bad thing, but again, depending on if you are used to this or not, it is different and requires a slowed down, not in a hurry attitude.
If you are used to a typical suburban 4 lane traffic light every .5 mile, passing the strip malls kind of driving, this is different. It's interstate or rural state routes to get there and 25 mph in the city.
I live in Kettering and one day a week I travel to troy for work. The drive there is not so bad but coming home is a awful but you would not be dealing with that. Where will you be woking if you move here.
The people of Troy are very nice. A lot of retired farmers. Tipp City's school rating at greatschools.net is a 9 out of 10 and Troy is a 7 out of 10. That is the average so there are some schools in troy that have a higher rating. Troy offers all the shopping you would need cept mall shopping. YOu would have to go to Beavercreek 30 mins away to get decent mall shopping.
Troy and Tipp City would be a good choice. Where are you coming from? I hope you are used to snow. I actually am moving to north carolina soon for a job and can't wait to get away from the snow and dealing with school closures while still having to get to work on time. Very stressful. But other than that Ohio is a great place to raise kids. I am a Buckeye at heart but looking for a change plus I have family in north carolina too. Godd Luck. I hope you hubby gets the job.

I'm almost afraid to answer the work question LOL.... around here telling people you work for the company he does is like signing your death wish and I'm sure it's the same there specially in the winter time. He works for the gas company and is wanting to relocate within the company.... which is where moving to Troy came into a possible play.
As for schools, they weight pretty heavy on the decision of where to live. I want my girls to go to the best schools possible and still be able to afford to put them in. Some schools around here if they are ranked really high for the state nearly triple the fees. So needless to say my girls don't go to the top school in our area.
Mall shopping isn't a concern but thank you for letting me know that bit of info, from time to time we do go to the mall... but usually kicking and screaming lmao. I actually hate any kind of shopping lol, but it is nice to know that shopping is pretty local that I would need to do.
I moved here from South Carolina.... and part of me really wants to go back home to the beaches and not as cold winters... We are in Southern Indiana now... Evansville area. School closings are insane in the winter time. I say all the time they need to just give these kids their vacations in the winter around here... they spend more time making up days in the summer than they get off it sometimes seems.
Thanks for the good luck wishes. They are much appreciated and needed :-)
