Question Moving to the Area

My husband has a new job with the FAA and is based in Dayton, Ohio. We will be looking to moving to the Dayton area and I am curious as to what are the best surrounding cities near the Dayton International Airport.

We have a yound child and although she isn't in school yet, I don't want to be moving again when she gets ready to start, so a great school system is a MUST!

When I was a child (many, many years ago), I lived in the Miamisburg/West Carrollton area, but I am not so sure that my husband will want to drive that far. But I am not familiar with any of the other surrounding areas/cities.

Thanks for any input ~ it's so hard to know where to go when you live out of state.

Hi there, I used to live in Butler Township, outside of Vandalia. The Dayton International Airport is located in Vandalia. The schools were considered good and the area was quiet and safe for the most part. As a kid I used to think how boring it was, and now I realize what a great place it was to raise kids.

Look at Greatschools to check it out... Greatschools.net Search: vandalia butler.

The airport area can be quite noisy so I wouldn't recommend living near it, but where we lived off of Brantford Rd very rarely had air traffic noise. We had a lot of neighbors who worked at the airport too. The town is small and you would have to go to Huber Heights or Englewood for your big box shopping, but Vandalia has a huge new Krogers which is wonderful, and a small downtown with other amenities. Butler township surrounds the city and is more rural, 2 lane roads, 35-55mph, some developments and some houses with large acreage. Some new building over off of Little York Rd.

Another town to check out is Englewood. Stay away from Northridge and Harrison Township...bad schools and higher crime. You can also go a bit further north into Miami County and look at Tipp City or even Troy.

Feel free to send me a pm if you would like more info. I don't live there anymore but visit my parents and brother regularly.

It depends a lot of what kind of community you'd like to reside in....small? Mid-sized suburb? Which will also determine the size of the school in said community. Based on what I know about the schools and communitites within a 10 minute or so drive from DAY...I'd say you'd be happiest in Vandalia/Butler Twp, Tipp City or the Northmont Area (Englewood/Clayton area) They are all very nice areas, with very good schools. Hopefully that helps. If your hubby is willing to make 20-25 minute the drive up 75 to work, you might check out Oakwood or Centerville/Washington Twp. (think Carmel, IN) as they have the best schools in the area. . .but I think you'd be happy with the first 3 I listed. Good luck and Welcome!
