I will be moving to the north suburbs of Dayton at the end of the month and need to know about the quality of the over-the-air TV reception (ie using a TV antenna instead of cable).

We currently live in Chicagoland and over-the-air recpetion is great and you get about 20-25 channels. We like not having the extra expense of a cable bill and would like to continue not having one.

thanks for all replies.

I think it will be pretty good - the towers in Dayton are located SW of the city, just north of Moraine.

Recommend going to Antenna Web to find out the recommended antenna and aiming for your location...

Also, you might consider building your own antenna. I haven't done so yet myself but plan to in the next couple of weeks - I've been doing a ton of research lately. Seems like there are some really high-performance designs out there right now that will work great. As I live on the south side of town, I'm planning on setting up an antenna so we can pick up both the Cincy and Dayton stations.

Two very popular designs...

I live in Lebanon (halfway between Dayton and Cincinnati) and I receive about 10 different channels and their subchannels with an indoor antenna made by RCA that has a built in amplifier. The HD reception seems to be a lot better than the old analog signals. With a portable handheld digital set with a whip antenna (a $50 Target special) I pick up two channels (5, 7) solidly and the rest are shaky.

I recommend planning to mount a small outside antenna with an amplifier. You could probably cover most Cincinnati and Dayton stations, and that would be a lot.
