Saw where the Ohio Supreme Court rules that cities can no longer require their employees to live within the city limits. Personally, I don't think Dayton will suffer as much of a loss as they believe they will. I also see an "up" side to the ruling; I believe the pool of talented employees will grow larger as others, in addition to Dayton residents, will compete for city jobs. Your thoughts?

I think the point that many of us are missing is not about residency itself, it's about Ohio being a "Home Rule" state. Daytonians voted 20 years ago to support residency. The Cities are supposed to have a certain amount of autonomy. So I think the bigger issue is has the Ohio Supreme Court set a dangerous precedent by overruling a "home rule"? I don't know enough about that aspect of the topic, but would love to hear from someone who does.

Good discussion at Urban Ohio, esp the last few posts on the ruling.

Residency requirements are silly, and there are a lot of benefits to NOT having them in place. That said, I understand tgasper's larger concern. Where will it end for the Supreme Court?

Good point, Tgasper. I, too, admit to not knowing enough about "Home Rule" and that the courts are taking the law into their own hands versus interpreting the law seems to be happening more and more these days. As much as I dislike the idea of a city requiring it's workers to live within the city limits, I'm also of the mind that I would live in any city that would hire me. Part of the reason we live in Washington Twp. is that my wife teaches at Centerville City Schools.

I do wonder if "home rule" has done more bad than good - perhaps it has enabled the balkanization of our region?
