I believe we have a winner!!! looked at "sanitary sewer" on Wikipedia and it seemed to be just as Wright Flyer says; a sewer system tied to a city system vs. a septic tank. I'd imagine that's mostly the case in Dayton and the surrounding suburbs.

Indeed that is correct. The main reason it appears on your water bill is because the sewer and water charges are broken down separately. While most of us just pay the charge (gallons used x rate) for both incoming water and outgoing sewer usage, there are cases where they may differ.

For example, you can have a separate water meter installed for irrigation since that water is not fed back into the sanitary sewer system. So if you have a large sprinkler system, you might have one meter for that where you used 1500 gallons while your house meter also measured a 1500 gallon usage for the same month. You'd pay for 3000 gallons of water but only 1500 gallons of sewer. Again, this doesn't affect most of us but I believe that is why it's broken down on the bills.

As far as seeing it in house listings, that is just as described earlier in that it just means you connect to the city sewer system and don't have a septic tank. It's also possible to have a well for water but still connect to the city sewer system in some older neighborhoods where the old septic systems have been bypassed - I have friends with a situation like this in Beavercreek.

WARNING: Your family could decide to retire in the Dayton area!!! Wckdstepmother, we ended up here on a lark and just LOVE it! We're thrilled with our home and neighbors. We were welcomed like we'd always lived here. And we just feel the "quality of life' here is hard to beat. Hope you enjoy you're time at Wrighjt-Patt. Oh, the only unusual thing (IMHO) WPAFB doesn't have the traditional "open house" with the air shows and other display, etc. In Dayton, the annual air show is actually a "trade show". It's held at Dayton's airport instead of on base. Now, it's an awesome show. But you have to pay to get in and I just hate the idea of paying to see aircraft that I worked on. The air show is this weekend and, for the first time in recent memory, the weather will actually be comfortable instead of DARN hot...

I love the Dayton area too. It gets such a bad rep, but why? Its such a great area, but I have my job moving me down the freeway a bit to Cincinnati, which is by far one of my favorite cities in the country. But I will not be far from Dayton at all, and thats one of the best things. Dayton has it all, great shopping, great parks, hospitals, good schools, nice suburbs, not too crazy, etc. Its not far from bigger cities like Columbus and Cincy either.

Dayton is a very very livable area.

The base may not do air shows, but they do a TATTOO the last Saturday of June. They usally find a local band to open, then the Air Force Band performs, with flyovers by "planes thru the era". They always have a big name headliner. Last year they had Charley Daniels, and this year was Aron Tippon, with tremendous fireworks for a finale.
