Default Shroyer Road? Dayton Public Schools?

My husband and I moved to Dayton last year and we rented for a year. Now we're trying to find a house and we've been looking in the Shroyer Park/Patterson Park/Kettering area. We've found a really great house on Shroyer Road but we're a bit unsure about it because Shroyer seems to alternate between residential and business, and we'd be fairly close to businesses. Any thoughts on that general stretch of area?

We're also concerned about schools - our neighbors where we live now LOVE Dayton Public Schools, but those people are the only ones we've heard rave about them. We've also heard from a few parents who send their kids to the public Montessori school and love it. We would prefer to be in Dayton rather than Kettering, because we work at and walk to UD - but we would appreciate thoughts on schools as well.

Thanks -

It would depend where exactly your house is on Shroyer. . .between The Tutor Day Spa and Dorothy Lane, your kids would go to Oakwood. Anything near Carmel's and north towards Patterson would be Dayton Public. Anything south of Dorothy Lane would be Kettering.

I think if you buy anything past Dorothy on Shroyer, it would make for a tough walk, but it could be done. I know from DLM to UD is only 2 miles and that's probably the furthest point in Oakwood. So, if you buy on Shroyer in Oakwood. . you could probably still walk and still be in the best school system.

I would say the choice on what school you'd like for your children to attend is up to you. If you're happy with Dayton, then I'd keep them in there. But, overall the oppotunites that they would have at their disposal would be greater in Oakwood or Kettering. If I had my choice, I'd say Oakwood, Kettering and Dayton in that order. I think there are some really great benefits to having your kids in a better educational system.

I wouldn't choose to live on Shroyer for a few reasons -- the traffic is heavy, it's dangerous for kids to play in the yard (again, very close to 40mph traffic), and there are some seedy apartments up and down the street, especially to the east of Shroyer. Hence, homes on Shroyer are cheaper than the rest of Oakwood.

If you work at UD, I'd look at homes on Irving, unless you don't want to be that close to campus. Irving also is a busy street, and you have college kid issues, but otherwise it seems nicer than most of Shroyer.

There also are some cheaper homes (smaller though) on Acorn in between Shroyer and Patterson Rd. That's a much quieter street than Shroyer, and close to UD.

Shroyer Rd north of Patterson is Dayton public, but it's a relatively nice area and inexpensive. I'm sure that DPS, like most urban districts, has some okay elementary schools. The trouble comes in middle and high school, when multiple neighborhoods come together into a single school, and those neighborhoods have kids with varying levels of academic preparation and maturity.

That area is real bad for crime; a lot of thefts from cars and the market is always robbed. I would reconsider, maybe further into the neighborhood...

Uhhh....I respectfully disagree. This is not a bad area. Shroyer and Patterson, I believe would place one in Patterson Park, which, is a nicer neighborhood and is home to many of Dayton's Finest.

Real bad for the type of crimes you mention would be Xenia Avenue, or East Third Street as examples.

I've read intermittent stories that the apartments along Wilmington near that area (on the west side of the road, not the senior complexes) experience frequent busts for drugs such as heroin. This is 100% random hearsay but I know someone who lives nearby who reports seeing and hearing this.

I grew up around there. The neighborhood has definitely changed. By current Dayton standards it is a good neighborhood but it's certainly not Oakwood or Centerville.

The apartments you mention do attract riff raff. Not sure why. They are not the worst but there are drug busts there often enough. Basically, stay south on Shroyer away from Wilmington and things will steadily get nicer until you find yourself in the middle of Oakwood.

Agree. Shroyer & vicinity are pretty nice by Dayton standards. Patterson Park is good, but also Shroyer south of Patterson. Housing stock is similar to the older parts of Kettering.

Uh, try again. Wilmington Belvedere had a murder in 2009(Ben Gulley) and the apartments in the 800 block are a hotbed for heroin activity
