If you were to spend $30k on a house in Dayton where would you buy
I have seen some pretty nice homes in Dayton that would work to buy for rentals that are around $30k. Any input on what areas to definately to stay out of? I realize for $30k I will not be outside the Country Club but the streetscapes I saw were not bad the the homes with some TLC look fine for blue collar rentals. Any input as to that?

I'm sure you purposely moved into a neighborhood who's residents are a completely different race, creed and religion so you could fill your diversity quota. There is nothing wrong with a white person who wants to live among his kind. When a white person does that, its people like you who brandish them as bigots! When a "nonwhite" person does the same thing, people like you have to whoop it up by saying things like: " they have no other choice than to live with their own. They are victims...whites wont let them in to their neighborhoods". Maybe there would'nt be so much of a schism if "non-whites" would at least try to assimilate. Get off your politically correct liberal high horse.

For $30k, go to westwood or maybe there's some stuff in Dayton view. Might also want to take a look at Patterson Park, South Park, and Linden Heights. (and maybe wright-dunbar, but some parts of it are really rough). You should do a post on Urban Ohio since urban living is their speciality.

However, stay away from Drexel, it IS our city's worst section, even though technically it's in the 'burbs. It is not a good deal.
Still, moving to Dayton is a good idea, and the house prices won't get any better, so good luck!!!

Drexel is home to the Louisville Outlaws MC clubhouse. If you get my drift.

Moving to Dayton (Maybe)
To anyone; We may be moving to Dayton too. What is the best neighborhood? Meaning the most affluent. Can you live in Columbus (Dublin, Powell, ((North Middle)) ) and commute to Centerville?

Oakwood is the most affluent. Sure, you could commute from C-bus, but expect over an hour's commute each way. I wouldn't do it.

WOW. . .that would make for a very long commute....as you are picking cities that are well north of Columbus and Centerville is south of Dayton. You'd be looking at at least an hour and a half, if not more from a city like Powell to Centerville. ..and that's one way
Honestly, Dayton has cities that are just as affluent, if not moreso than Dublin, Powell etc. The most affluent city in Dayton is Oakwood. It's considered 'old' money with huge estates on the West side of Far Hills. Homes sell in the millions on the west side. On the East Side of Far Hills in Oakwood, homes can be anywhere from 200K-600K. Oakwood and Centerville both sit on Far Hills/Rt. 48 and you could be to one or the other in about 10 minutes.
The next most affluent city is Centerville/Washington Twp....espeically the area around Mad River Rd/Alex Bell. Also southern parts of Centerville near Springboro are also pretty wealthy. Other cities around Dayton that are considered affluent would be Beavercreek, Bellbrook/Sugarcreek Twp, Springboro/Clearcreek Twp. and the westside of Kettering. All of the above communities are well within 20 minutes of Centerville.
Hope that helps.

You're making a fair point.
What I meant is that there is a HUGE thread of xenophobia running through the "average Daytonian." I live in Warren County (heavily white & Republican) and most of my neighbors are scared to death of anything approaching diversity. This is not a tolerant area.
My initial posting and the follow up were purely sarcastic troll bait. They were based upon my lifetime of observing the region from the inside-out. The average lifetime white middle class Dayton resident is scared to death of cultural differences or challenges to their thinking.
Dayton itself is pretty liberal (and black/multicutural) but the surrounding region is pure "Archie Bunker" country. The area tends so much toward this attitude that I tend to push back when I see it.
Sorry if I offended!

I don't think you should generalize so much about the area...maybe where you are it's all "Archie Bunker" types, but don't include me in that! Where I grew up was not very diverse, but I didn't grow up thinking that races other than white weren't welcome.

Again, I think it just depends on who you meet and interact with in the community.
Still, if you look at voting patterns, places like Dayton and some of the inner suburban districts can be more liberal or moderate Democrat then some of the suburbs further out from the CBD, which are usually strongly conservative or vote Republican. Still, not every Republican is an "Archie Bunker", otherwise, where would that leave little old me?
My point is, each person is different and a vote for a particular party doesn't mean they hold all of that party's stereotypical ways and ideas.
Oh, and driving between Powell/Dublin and Centerville is just plain crazy. I go back and forth between OSU and Beavercreek (East of Dayton) enough to know. That is usually at least an hour.
