To put it quite simply, yes. You're looking at a forty-five minute drive, at the very least.
If you really want that area, though, go for Tipp City, which is EXTREMELY similar to Troy in atmosphere, amenties, etc.
Personally, though, if you want a suburban house, I'd recommend places like the Huber Heights/Miami Co. section of town for better schools, that kinda cool urbanist subdivision off of Chambersberg by Bellefountaine rd. in Huber, or B-Creek. Xenia might be a better option, too, if you're looking more along the lines of what you would find in Troy, as well.
If you want rural, Bethel Twp. of Miami or Clark county is probably the best option, along with Mad River Twp. in Clark Co. or the area just outside Fairborn/Yellow Springs/Clifton. If you want rural, though, you really have to look at the land carefully, though, to make sure it doesn't have major problems, like bad drainage, and rural homes... vary. I'll say that much.
If urban's what you want to do, basically all of Dayton's urban 'hoods are easily accessible from the base, with South Park and St. Anne's Hill as probably your best options. Oakwood is really nice, as well, if you can afford it.
Good Luck!!!!!

People do commute from Troy to W-P, but I agree that Tipp City and Bethel Township are pretty good alternatives (esp Tipp if you want small town life) that are closer to the base.

Troy is great if you enjoy the history and charm of a place. Tipp City is similar in some ways but I wouldn't say it's exactly the same...infact, there are quite a few signifigant differences. Tipp City does not offer the same ammount that Troy has...not even close. However, Tipp City is a little pricier and smaller. But I don't know if it's 45 minutes....maybe 30 or 35. Depends on the traffic. Another close by community is Butler Township. Great schools...upper middle class , plenty of diversity, plenty of opportunities, and a mix of older and newer. Well kept area and clean and much lower crime rates than that of Huber Heights or Englewood or Beavercreek.

To me it depends on how you define far. If there was something I liked in Troy then I would say not at all. It is really relative to how long of a commute you consider long. I used to live in NYC and commute to Connecticut. Roughly an hour and 1/2. It went pretty quick.

we currently commute 23 miles each way, rush hour takes 45 min to an hour. Doable - but gets old. Would suck it up for a great house/deal though I reckon

That's probably comparable to Troy to WPAFB. The mileage could be a little more if you need to go to the southern end of the base. Traffic on 70 to 75 to 4 or 675 is not too bad most of the time. It can back up really bad with the occasional accident. It's not consistently congested like 75 through downtown is though. You should be ok if you find what you are looking for in Troy. Troy is very nice btw. Best of luck.
