Default BRAC effect

Is BRAC having any effect on jobs and construction in the Dayton Metro? I don't hear much about BRAC in Dayton. On the other hand, Huntsville, Alabama is expecting a large influx of residents due to BRAC and construction is booming in their city and on Redstone Arsenal.

I am not sure how Wright -Patterson AFB had held up from the BRAC but unfortunately the Defense Finance Center on Wilmington Pike is in for closure and a few hundred jobs were lost. It wasn't a big agency but IMO that hurt the economy of Dayton even more.

WPAFB is expecting around 1100 jobs from the latest round of BRAC. I don't know if you would consider that a "large" influx? Most of those jobs are coming from San Antonio in a new Human Performance Research Wing of the Air Force. Most of the research focuses on medical performance of people in flight, be it air or space.

On top of the 1100 known military and civilian positions coming to town, it is expected (a.k.a. estimated) that another 1000+ contractors will migrate here with the new performance wing. The construction as you saw has started. Most people will begin moving into the region in 2010. Some are already coming.

Still, it's hard to give exact numbers in terms of people coming and when because certain personel are not required to move, so sometimes they hire in new people. But that usually means former military personel that already have security clearances.

There's a new office park going up in Beavercreek off I-675, which is starting to fill with tenents. Then there is the new office buildings along Pentagon Blvd in Beavercreek. There's also a hospital being built in the middle of those offices.

Wright Flyer is correct about spec office development being driven by BRAC, but some of the development off Pentagon Blvd is also being driven by mission growth at certain on-base units, not BRAC relocations.

Glad to hear this. This is fantastic news for the Dayton/Cincinnati region. There should be thousands of support and contractor jobs following the government jobs. Huntsville is expecting 4500 government jobs with thousands more support and contractor jobs to follow so their BRAC is larger.

Looks like a team has been sent to promote Dayton. In the past only 10%-15% of relocated government employees followed their jobs so Dayton will have to get busy recruiting.

The impact in Huntsville will probably be more noticeable due to the size of the job growth vis a vis the size of the metro area. Here in Dayton the impact will be localized to the eastern suburbs along I-675.
