My wife and I are moving to the West Carrollton area in July and are wondering some nice, safe places to live. We are willing to drive 15-20 minutes if need be. Thanks!

It really depends on your tastes in living and how much house you can afford. If you were to consider suburbs, I would stay out of West Carrollton if you can avoid it. It's not that West Carrollton is bad, as their are some nice parts along the Miamisburg boundary, but the school system is subpar to many nearby districts. I would look into Miamisburg/Miami Township, parts of West Kettering depending on your budget, Washington Township/Centerville, Springboro, and Germantown. Also, West Carrollton was hit hard by GM's closing of the neighboring Moraine Assembly Plant.

All of these are typical suburbs, except Germantown, which is its own town which is slowly becoming a suburb, but it has its own separtate identity. Kettering is the oldest of the bunch, so sometimes cheapest, but it also has large estates in pockets West of Far Hills Ave. Washington Township/Miami Township both have lots of development, commercial and residential because of the Dayton Mall. Miamisburg is/was like Germantown with its own separate, real downtown.

One place also worth mentioning is the farm community west of West Carrollton, originally named Farmsville. Just make sure you are in their school district and not Jefferson Township's to the north of here and West Carrollton. The schools there are in pretty poor shape. Moraine is another place to probably stay away from because its taxes came largely from the now defunct GM Plant.

Thank you very much for the information. Having someone's opinion that knows the area is great to have. I will for sure keep all of these points in mind when we go look at places next week. Thanks again wrightflyer!

I would say that "wrightflyer" has given you some good advice. Obviously, part of your decision is going to be budget driven, whether you want to rent an apt or buy a house, etc. You can always find an apt complex with a six month lease and live there until you get to know the area. You can stop by any Kroger grocery store and pick up an apartment guide that lists locations and prices of a lot of area complexes, including more than a few that would be within your commute time.
