I posted about this in the Chat thread and Glory recommended that it be posted as a freebie.

I was checking on the cost of running ceiling fans when I came across a website that calculates the average electrical cost of just about any household appliance you might have. I found it somewhat interesting. Be sure to insert your cost per KWH:

I agree. Everyone should make a list and take some time to check out what they are spending to upkeep their house. It's the few dollars you can save here and there by making easy choices that ends up getting you to the other side of a bad time.

Thanks tfw for sharing the link!!

I've been upset because my electric bill has been $200 and I've been leaving the thermostat at 84. But, when I see that my ceiling fans are costing @ $40-50 and my big-screen TV, which runs almost 24/7, costs @ $40, I understand why my bill is so high. Now I dont feel so bad.

I'm having an Energy Audit done for free by a Houston energy company in two weeks and will see what I might do to make my house more energy-efficient. I already have an appointment for someone to add more insulation to the attic -- and next year I'm going to have two solar fans installed in the roof/attic. I really want to have solar panels installed but those cost a fortune and I just dont have the $$$ for it now.

Attic fans - look into having a switch also installed, so you can turn them off in the winter on cold days. Keeps the house warmer, since the warm air is staying in the attic. I did this with mine - had the electrician run a wire and put a switch inside a closet

Solar panels - Ghods, they're expensive!! I looked into it, and it wasn't feasible for me since I don't plan on being in this house much longer. My friend put some panels on her house, since she plans on staying here and dying in this valley
