Lead acid batteries like those found in automobiles can build hydrogen gases around them. The increased spark from an incorrectly connected jumper cable can cause the battery to explode spraying battery acid into the face of anyone standing close by. Voila! Possible blindness.

Also an incorrectly connected jumper cable can knock the diode out of the newer model alternators. Having just replaced an alternator in my wife's Montana minivan, it is neither an inexpensive or a desirable weekend job.

Good find!

Thanks for the addiitonal info High Plains....I would never have thought a battery could explode. I also didn't know a wrong connection could mess up the car. Guess it's good these sort of freebies are made available.

I sort of thought I knew a lot about cars until a fellow from our local AutoZone of all places told me that even a weak battery can sometimes knock out these newer alternators. I think that's what happened to my wife's minivan, i.e., the old battery went down and placed too much stress on the alternator. What a job to replace it but that story is best told in the automotive forums.

BTW, a battery once blew up in front of my dad. Luckily he was not hurt too badly. That was more years ago than I wish to admit.

That label is a great find. This heat we have been having in Texas has no doubt caused a lot of people to have to break out the jumper cables.
