I'd be really careful with this one. Auto repair shops LOVE to give "free" inspections. There is very little chance that they won't find a problem with your a/c system. Or anything else they inspect for free. The sole purpose of promotions like these is to get a potential customer into the shop. Obviously, the person who brings the car in for a free a/c check (or brake check, or exhaust check, or whatever check) is open to the possibility that there may be something wrong (why else would they want it checked?), so they will find something.

Beware free inspections.

When I was going to HVAC school in Daytona Beach, a classmate worked at a large auto air-conditioning repair shop. They would get people in for their free inspections and spray black paint above the a/c compressor on the hood insulation. They would then show the "oil" stain to the customer and offer to repair the seal for a couple hundred bucks. Usually the customer would opt for the repair. That probably won't happen to you though...

I planned on using the $19.95 oil change coupon....and also get my AC checked while I was there. I thought Meineke was a really reputable company.

My classmate did not work at Meineke. How does your AC work now? If you have a meat thermometer, stick it in one your vents while you are driving down the road. Your air temp coming out of your vent should be somewhere between 42 and 45 degrees on an 80 degree day. If it is, your AC works just fine.

Sure, get it checked. Just don't get it fixed there when they tell you something wrong's with it (and they most likely will). Take it to someone you trust and get a second opinion. What a great way to test my theory!

And I don't know much about Meineke, but they're a business. They're in it to make money. I'm not singling them out, they're singling themselves out by offering a free inspection. They are not doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. They are doing it to make money.
