Do the middle and high schools have police officer's working in them? I'm just curious since some of the school districts in Northern Delaware have them.

There is not a daily police presence at any of the 2-High Schools nor the 3-Middle Schools to my knowledge. The current police staffing levels south of the canal likely bear that out. There are only 2-4 NCCo Sheriff Officers on shift at any given time south of the canal, covering all calls for Port Penn, South St Georges, Odessa, Townsend and Blackbird; and prior to 2007 they were also the police presence in Middletown.

I know at some of the schools in kent county they have school officers but they aren't police officers. They are more like security guards. They help with issues with students and restrain them if necessary. If anything serious happens then the police are called.

we live next to appo high and I always see a police car there. different at redding middle. sometimes I would feel better if they had one there, when I am taking my recycling stuff there.

Partially off-topic, but the mention of a police car reminds me of this story.

A few years ago, a rumor spread through my community like wildfire. It seems that the high school football quarterback was seen being escorted out of our high school, accompanied by two officers, placed in the back of a police car and whisked away. The rumors were beyond control. Did he assault someone? Was he selling drugs in the school? How much trouble was he in?

It turns out the he was being picked up by the DARE officers and being escorted to one of our middle schools to speak to the kids about staying away from drugs.

A police car in front of a school building is not necessarily a sign of trouble.

I spoke to a Middletown HS teacher today. No police or private security at either MHS or Appo during the standard school schedule, but the police do have a have a presence at special events and are there for DARE program, etc.

Our former schools in NJ had Student Resource Officers in the High Schools - started after 9/11 and continued on. LOL about recycle bins at Redding Middle. Yes, the area can be shall I say interesting...I recycle there too and one of our children attends school there. I frequently see police in the area which i think is great. Honestly, I have never encountered "trouble" and have never felt unsafe there. I even have the "courtesy wave" going with some of the crew in the neighborhood because I am in and out of there so much.

I live in Spring Arbor in Middletown, immediately adjacent to Appoquinimink HS. There is no reason for police there except for special events. Some of our residents are aggravated because they have large loud speakers and can blast some loud music at their events. I say get over it! I'd be hard pressed to find a quieter community, including that school complex. On the other side of our development, we have cows grazing in the pasture. It may be a shopping center some day, but not today. This is a very pastoral area, immediately adjacent to MD horse farms - all of a three minute drive from my garage.
