The sign actually says "Home of Tax Free Shopping". I personally am a little bummed that this is what we are best known for....

With the rent budget that you mention... you should have no trouble finding a nice property in a good neighborhood. Is Newark your targeted area?

In the times (of financial crisis) we are living any ray of hope to save money before going down the 'drain' may make a point with visitors like the OP and all states are competing for attracting people with jobs to move to their states. I do agree that it does not sound romantic but one may have heard the cliche "it's the economy, stupid" that has been governing for a generation now.

OP has a realistic rent range to find some place to rent in a desirable neighborhood.

You can find some great buys, no tax, in Delaware, but we often find much better availability and excellent sales in Maryland. So, at times, even with the MD sales tax, we find what we want and pay the same--or less--than in Delaware.

We do have quite a lot of shopping experience here in DE, having lived here more than 30 years.
