I will be relocating to Wilmington, DE area within the next few weeks. I have read others who have accepted positions in Salem, NJ. My situation is similar.

I expect a commute of 45 minutes to 1 hour, and am interested in information on condo living in Wilmington. I have seen Trolly Square area mentioned, and also have questions regarding the Riverfront District. I see several nice condos for rent there and am wondering about the area regarding safety, crime. I see where this is a "revitalized" area, is it thriving and well on its way? Or struggling with the economy with empty buildings and high vacancies?

Is this considered a desirable area or still one plaqued with many issues? I had a friend who knew that area over 10 years ago and suggested it might not be the best place to live, but he was not familiar with it since the revitalization efforts have been underway.

I am interested in any information regarding elementary schools for those areas as well.

Any and all info would be appreciated. I do understand the inherent issues with living in a city, just looking for any inside information / helpful hints on living in this area with a school-aged child.

Thank you.

a friend of mine live in the christina landing apartment building and is very happy with everything. but he is single, parks his car in the garage and does not want to play outside with friends, as your school age kid will do.

I would look for a neighborhood in north wilmington or pike creek, I guess.

school choice is a big subject too. I am not sure about City schools, maybe someone else does.
good school district I know first hand are brandywine (north wilmington), red clay (pike creek area, lots of townhomes and apartments) and appoquinimink (most of the schools south of channels with some exceptions).

I am sure, there are good and not so good places in downtown wilmington, but everything seems to be close together. no doubt, there are more drug problems and homicides going on as it is the case in lovely middletown, where I live. with kids I just would look for a safe as possible place, for me there is no need for more risks in live as we already have . good luck !

The riverfront is still in it's larval stage of vitality. You shouldn't be worried about crime at the riverfront, or in Trolley Square. Both are fairly isolated from bad areas, by train tracks, the river, and other geography.

The riverfront is a bit more artificial, it is probably a bit quieter, whereas Trolley Square has just a bit more traffic (foot and car, bike, etc.)

I would knock your commute down to 30 minutes, by the way.

Also, your child is best in private schools in Delaware. I can't speak on public elementary schools with any expertise, otherwise I would help you out.

Again - nothing to worry about at the riverfront other than an overpriced Sushi bar, and teems of Children running around at the Children's Museum.

I'm not sure what you meant by "knock your commute down to 30 minutes". Are you saying that is how long to get from the Riverfront to Salem? I will actually be working about 10 miles south of Salem at one of the nuclear plants down there, so I expected at least a 45m commute on good traffic days...

To the OP - How old are your children? The schools in DE vary so much. If you have HS kids, I would recommend Brandywine School District over any others if you are considering public schools.

I love Trolley Square. I have 2 rental houses there and everyone I rent to ends up buying in the immediate area. It's a wonderful community... historic and well laid out with tree lined streets, parks, recreation, a zoo, the Brandywine River, restaurants, bars & nightlife, shops and all within walking distance. This area is more expensive but you end up with lots of professionals and a great sense of community. I love all my neighbors in Trolley. Trolley Sq is in the Red Clay school district which has Charter (highly rated by Newsweek) and AI duPont HS.

Use this site to compare schools....
Alexis I. Dupont High School - Wilmington, Delaware/DE - Public School Profile

If you are considering a move to the city....the general rule of thumb for safety is to stay west of I-95. (Farther west you go the safer ie: Triangle > Trolley Sq > Art Museum)

Good luck with your search.

It's right over the bridge and down 49... not far at all... 30 mins.. you wont deal with traffic in that part of Jersey.
