Default General Contractor for basement finishing?

Any recommendations?

We started out framing the basement when my father in law (who is a general contractor in AZ) was here over Christmas. The framing is about 90% done. My husband just got a big promotion at work and just won't have the time to commit to seeing the finishing through.

Anyway, does anyone have anyone the can recommend?

We used Unlimited Construction. Our basement was completely unfinished when we bought our home. They did a fantastic job! Home Renovations Landenberg, Chester County, Delaware County PA, and New Castle County, DE. Feel free to PM me for more info.

Just get a good contractor, lots of referances, pictures, check BBB on them, licensed, insured, don't pay all up front, etc, etc, etc....

Finishing basements is one of the biggest contractor scams going!

How much should one budget for a finished basement (Rec room, full bathroom, bedroom)?? We are building a home but builder wants 40K to finish basement and we are thinking of waiting and contracfting it out later in hopes of saving some $$$ ?

tfgren:

Just make sure that there is a sewer hook up in the basement and an egress window where the logical BR location is - -just to protect your future options

The cost will depend on the sq. ft., finishes and materials you select....drop ceiling v. sheet rock, flooring selection, etc. I completely agree with making sure you have water hook up just in case you would want a bathroom or wet bar at some point. Most towns require a walk out, bilco or egress window in a finished basement. You could always get estimates from contractors to help you decide if using the builder or "doing it yourself" would be best for you.

in general, builder price will be higher ... you are a captive audience ... most people can't afford to have that expense on top of the already maximized mortgage payment but if you plan for that expense ahead of time (which is apparent) your decision to have it done afterwards may pay good dividend.

Absolutely! Egress window (minimum) is in County Code in Kent County, and in all jurisdictions. A 3 pc. rough-in bath in the basement is a perk lots of builders offer in our area. The egress windows are now longer and a little wider. They upgraded those a couple of years ago.
