Looking forward to retirement in about 5 yrs. Currently live in south Jersey and considering moving to Sussex county DE. for retirement. My families sharing ownership of a house in south Jersey, so don't want to locate too far from them, but can't wait to get out of New Jersey! Looking to live in lower DE., but not too close to the coast because of high housing costs and property taxes. Don't care about schools (kids are grown & through college), and want to avoid heavy population areas with crime and congestion. Plan on downsizing home to single-level 2-3 bedroom with 1-2 car garage and SMALL lot for owning. Any suggestions of subdivisions or small towns that might meet some of this criteria would be appreciated.
Thanks

We are so glad we found this site! There is so much mis-information out there about Delaware real estate, land leases, modular vs stick built, etc. It is great to read "real people's" ideas, concerns and positive input. Having said that, my husband and I have been looking for an inexpensive place to retire. We only have our social security income to qualify on purchasing anything. We both will work once we "arrive" at our retirement destination. No dreams of becoming wealthy at this late date! LOL. We were considering the pan handle of West Virginia....Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown, Charles Town areas. Does anyone have any knowledge of Delaware vs West Virginia (in these areas, we are not interested in mid-state or southern WV)? Would love to hear! WV seems very inexpensive to us. We currently live in Denver, CO., where it has become so expensive to live it is ridiculous! Thanks for any insight! JoanieG

The Middletown, Magnolia and Bear are places I would start to keep you close to Jersey, but they are not in Sussex county.

Hi, Jtoohey01! I've never lived in West Virginia, but I have family in Harpers Ferry. She likes it there and finds it to be safe and peaceful. She is elderly and retired so she didn't move there for excitement. This family member moved there from a nice area in Delaware and she likes Harpers Ferry much more. She said it's more laid back. However, do keep in mind that WV has a widespread drug and crime problem. Do your research when it comes to searching for a home there. Yes, the COL is lower there as well. We considered it for our retirement too, but I think we're leaning towards places farther south.
