Well BeachLiz, this would work fine for you, too. I pickup NASCAR and every other "sport" with this antenna. It just doesn't make sense to pay for something you can get for free. People are unknowingly wasting money by continuing to pay for cable and satellite. I lack for nothing to watch. Before the transition to digital signals I was using rabbit ears and only got 2 snow channels, esp. towards the end. It's been over 3 years and I have no complaints which is more than can be said about those stupid subscription services. It's way better than anything you can pay for.

As suspected, it's still a huge secret, this free over-the-air w/ an antenna dtv/DTV.

I had been considering lowering my pay tv bill. First of all it is not a quality issue. Verizon fios has excelent picture quality and very few service interuptions. But, I want watch new movies and not have to wait until everyone else has seen them. For example, How to Train Your Dragon just came to HBO this month. I could have paid 4.99 to see it on demand but I don't want to pay my current tv bill then have to pay an additional charge for a movie I want to watch. I watch more basic cable then anything else. I'd consider getting a net flix device, but I don't have the money for that right now. I do watch some of the series on the premium channels, but to me it feels like paying a fee for watching the equivalent of Grey's Anatomy. Something needs to happen.

As stated in other threads, I just bought a house in Harbeson. One of the issues I have is that (I believe) Comcast is my only choice for cable. I had Comcast here for years and switched to FIOS when it became available. A few bucks in savings but the service is 100% better. As far as "cutting the cord", I'm not sure I'm there yet, especially while they are running "Game of Thrones" on HBO.

@Steve...I got a blu-ray player for Christmas and have been streaming Netflix ever since for $8 a month. Admittedly the choices are thin (Fox stopped all of their shows last month for a few weeks, but they are back on). Amazon on Demand is a buck cheaper than VOD but you don't get 5.1 surround. Amazon has a daily special for 2 bucks, just got to pay attention to your emails.

I'll eventually do something like that. But even that is not enough. if you think about it you pay twice even for things on basic cable. If you regularly watch The Daily Show and also pay for internet service, you are paying twice for the same thing. I get internet streaming is in it's infancy, it just burns me that if I want to watch something over the net I have to get another device to stream it properly to the TV.

So lets see
basic cable service
basic internet service
netflix device
some other typ of device if I want to watch other types of tv streamed over the internet.

there should be 1 access unit, and various devices could connect to it

computer for networking
TV for tv service and internet streams
gaming device
etc

What we have now forces us to pay double and triple times for the same thing.

Add on to that:

AV Receiver - $400-1000
5-7 Speakers - $500-3000
Sub-Woofer - $300-700 (Gotta have those gut wrenching explosions)
Various Cables (HDMI/Cat 5) - $100-200
After Market Universal Remote - $50-100

Now your ready to watch TV. I love capitalism. (Apologies for the non-DE post).

PS: A contractor to install everything correctly - $???????

I don't think I'm ready to cut ties with having cable TV just yet. I could definitely live without all the pay movie channels (HBO, Starz, etc) but there are certain stations that I consider requirements for my personal viewing pleasure, including Turner Classic Movies, Food Network, CNN, The C-SPAN channels, Bravo (must see "Top Chef") and a few others. When I arrive next year, I'll be a Comcast customer.

I was a lot happier with the Weather Channel when they actually showed the weather 24 hours a day. I am so tired of these "Cantore Stories", "Pictures from the Edge" and "When Weather Stole Your Grandmother's Cookies", especially when there is real weather happening and they are busy broadcasting these time wasters.
